So I am looking for a way to add some rim light to a couple walking in the street during the day. The light needs to give them a feeling of being in late winter light. The scene is being shot with a stead. We can't install lights on the street. My idea is to use a boom like sound engineers use. To get it above and slightly behind them with some spill both behind and on one side of their faces. The light needs to be light enough for someone to walk with the couple (as if he was a sound guy).
My solution is to try and use a chinese ball which is light in weight and can be rotated up and down on the boom creating a feeling of incident sunlight occasionally hitting them - as if they were walking on a bridge with trestles that occasionally blocked or let the light through, or as if the sun was poking through the trees.
The problem is that I need to find a way to use LED's and it has to be powered off of batteries. No generators or AC current. I currently do this with LED panels and V-Mounts, but I have not seen a Chinese ball solution.
Your suggestions?

Just put 10 meters of lite ribbon around the liar of a 19' china ball on a boompole and power it with a Dtap cable to Anton Bauer.

Some inspiration

Hi Clayton,

here some solutions used by one of our customers Arnaud Cailloux. Sometimes using one F&V R-300 ring light with a smaller chinese ball or two R-300 lights within a bigger chinese lantern - with the magnetic R-300 tungsten filter attached or without. All powered by Sony NP-F compatible DV batteries.

Best,
Mark

PS: Great solution Bob!

That's an interesting solution Mark-André. How exactly did you place the two ring lights in the larger ball?
Possible to see how you hooked up the NP-F batteries? (I have three of them as well)

Just put 10 meters of lite ribbon around the liar of a 19' china ball on a boompole and power it with a Dtap cable to Anton Bauer.

Great solution! I agree, Bob rocks. :)

Here you go, some more images how Arnaud solved it.

We will upload a short video from Arnaud about it very soon.

I like the ring light idea but I can't see that this would put out enough light in a daylight scenario as Clayton was suggesting. A Chimera china ball/chinese lantern with an 800w joker HMI attached may give you enough.

LiteRibbon LED on American Hustler

Kemalettin you beat me to it!!! Was going to reference the exact same thing! Haha.

Clayton - yes, on American Hustle they literally did exactly what you proposed. The film was shot mostly on a steadycam (on a 24mm)...and they needed a roving fill light. They ended up booming a China Ball and putting in those LED lightribbon's all bunched inside - the advantage was the LED's they used were both DIMABBLE...and COLOR adjustable (from daylight to Tungsten)...they were constantly riding the output and temperature throughout takes, etc.

i was debating with my gaffer friend he thinks LiteRibbon is unnecessary and expensive.Any cheaper options against Litegear leds? Starting from 1000$ its a lot money for me to waste on LEDs.

It's actually your best bang for the buck, here is super gaffer Pat Murray using the rig on American Hustle, by far the cheapest and most used light on the movie.

May not be what you are looking for but it is an inexpensive alternative. I used dewalt flashlights with 2" pvc conduit. I bought some led strips from amazon 3200k and 5500k that has sticky back on it. A little PVC glue and solder and bob is your uncle.
