I have a wc vmount from my scarlet mx and was planning on using it for the epic w. Is my only option the base expander from red?

Base expander with RC batteries will be your cheapest option. You'll have to put up with a battery lead or a custom mount for the batteries.
Multistar 4s Lipo: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...apacity_4S_5200mAh_Multi_Rotor_Lipo_Pack.html

With a cable like this: http://brushlessgimbals.com/p/8723946/superthin-90-power-connector-for-red-epic.html

Have been running my Epic with this setup for 4 years now, great for the cost, recharge speed and taking the weight off the camera.

you might be able to sue this on your wc mount.
