Hi could this be the cheapest Scarlet-X rig for getting the camera up and working?

1x Scarlet-x w. side SSD and Canon AL
1x Redmote
1x RedTouch 5.0 LCD
1x Battery Belt Clip
1x V-Mount Battery (Red Brick or any of choice)

What do you guys think? Could this work for starters? It would also be the lightest Scarlet-X rig.

Either that, or try to find an older 5" RED Monitor ($400-$500) and buy the Side Handle (used around $800). Then you have a form factor you can work with. Then you can buy Red Volts eventually as another power source.

I would buy a side handle instead of the Redmote, unless you are expecting to do a lot of jib work. With the option of buying four red volts, you can juggle exteriors with interiors where you can probably power the camera through the mains (in fiction this is certainly possible, for doc work to have v-locks is a good option. This is just my suggestion for your starting point. Of course having v-locks is important on the long run. But I can hire 6 IDX batteries here in London for £25/day. You can probably get these fairly cheap wherever you are. I would also get 2 x 64GB redmags, so you can back up using a mac in between.

You might consider this for your V-Lock it was $280 when I got mine few months ago

comes with free charger and works quite well, though you might need a minimum of 2 units since v-locks generally take quite some time to fully charge up

I would buy a side handle instead of the Redmote
+1

Redmote is not a necessity. I'd say get a battery plate from WC or VF instead of a battery belt clip, and get at least 2 or 3 Red Bricks + charger. Side Handle is nice and I myself is a fan of this module, but you can handle just fine without it if you have 5" Touch.

And don't forget SSDs. Two 128GB or four 64GB.

hey im in same boat with you :)
let me suggest something if you are on building new setup for Scarlet/Epic
1-First Side Handle! its a sure MUST own equipment on the list.if you get side handle you dont even need touch screen.
2-VF Battery Plate.i tested WC and few variants and VF is the best one.I know there are cheaper options but its a serious decision and throw few bucks more for best one on this.
3-Top Plate-Get the 49$ Scarlet Top plate from VF or go with Gini Rigs one :)
4-Baseplate Gini Rigs its 99$ on ebay.Shame its copy of WC one and only 15mm rod support :(
5-PL mount on ebay- There is some guy from europe produces PL mount for Epic and its 500$ Killer Deal for sure! dont miss
6-DONT GO with CHEAP Batteries.Trust me :) it ll pay itself in future and invest on PAG ones.Best Batteries in the market.you ll end up getting new ones after one year if you get cheap chinese batts from ebay.

As others have said - You do not need the REDMOTE if You have the touch LCD.
What You are missing thou is media and the reader for the media.
So the absolute cheapest working Scarlet would be:

1x Scarlet-x w. side SSD and Canon AL
1x RedTouch 5.0 LCD (with the included LCD cable)
1x 48GB REDMAG
1x RED STATION MINI

This alone makes for the cheapest working Scarlet since it comes with AC power supply...

As funny as it sounds - there is a Scarlet owner who used the Scarlet via the power supply running from an UPS in his backpack. He was waiting for his battery solution but needed to shoot ASAP...

You can go even cheaper with:

1x Scarlet-X with side SSD and Canon AL
1x Redmote
1x Third party LCD HDMI monitor
1x 48GB Redmag
1x Red station mini

Then you can navigate through menus/settings with Redmote(mounted on the back as local or remotely) and have more resolution on third party LCD monitor vs low res small Red touch LCD..

You will still need to mount it to the Scarlet. So don't forget to add the mounting bracket / noga arm... ;o)

1x 48GB Redmag

I'd avoid 48GB Redmags for anything other than a firmware backup disk.

There's always a chance that you might work with EPIC or even get one in the future and 48GB SSDs are not fully featured for EPIC use
