What is the cheapest solution for a "out of the box" ready to shoot Scarlet (with an estimation on the price of the body)?

Please fill me in, because I think I didn't get it. Thank you!

None of us got it. At last available information, the Fixed 2/3" Lens Scarlet was $3750 for the kit. The announcement today said it will end up being slightly higher when they finally announce the price and delivery date. We'll know more after their announcement November 30th.

I'm kind of tired and distracted from catching information around forum - announcement about another announcement .... :confused1:

Seemed to be a little anti-climatic too to have it just announced on a thread, with some ommissions and in a rather casual conversational style. But again, I thought it would be an announcement about when we'd be able to view a wooden mockup or another set of high rez photos. I'm being patient though as my time to pull the trigger on a camera for my ultimate purpose is about a year away. wonder if that's a possibility?

I'd say it's very likely to be out next year, but then again a lot of us were thinking the exact same thing last year around this time.

I would say, plan on spending at least $5,000 - $6,000 to get shooting with a 2/3 fixed lens scarlet. That's been my target budget for about 10 months now, even before the slight price increase was announced. The bare bones is just not good enough. You're going to want to be able to purchase extra batteries and CF cards for sure. The great news is that you wont have to buy a mattebox since the fixed with work with screw on filters! 77mm.

I'm actually hoping that the 2/3's don't start rolling out before June because I'm about to get a 7D and I'd really like to be able to refuel my savings with the money I spend on it to use on the Scarlet.

If you can, try to save at least $10k.

So, the question is (because we can't be sure): is there still a 2/3" Fixed Scarlet "Ready to shoot" Set (body, fixed lens, CF module, battery device and a monitoring device; guestimated target price being subject to change was 3750$) and if there is, how much will it be?

Thank you for your knowledge anyway :)

Edit: What we know is, that there is a limit to the price:

There are people that love to speculate in a void. Whoever said that Scarlet 2/3" was going to cost $8000 must just love to hear themselves talk... no offense intended.

Sorry for posting again:

Just to show what angle I am coming from:

A working scarlet needs at least:

Side Handle 950$ (not sure if it includes a battery; don't want to speculate here)
2.8" LCD 900$
Side CF 500$
+ CF-Card

2350$ for accessories + CF card(s) and maybe a battery.

The 2/3 fixed body was "announced" as 3000$ and might have a "mild price increase".
If I don't have a major error in my concept here a working basic Scarlet set will start at 5350$ (+ CF card, maybe + battery + mild price increase).
Not blaming anyone, if it had been possible Jim would have made it for the guestimated 3750,-, but we are quite a bit away from that now, right?

That is the same math I came up with Felix. All we need to know now is how much the "mild increase" in price will be, and if any of this must have modules might be included with the fixed lens model.

In any case, it looks like the magic number to own Scarlet will be around 6K.

6K....is quite a bit. Anybody see anything wrong with the concept from above? What was it that "killed" it? I don't recall the price of the sidehandle or LCD in the past. Is that what bumped it up suddenly from the $3750 expected price from these past few months?

Yeah, I dunno. I really really want a fixed Scarlet to work with for under $4K. Heck, even $5K was a possibility. But closing in on 6K (before tax or what have you) just kills it for me. I'm looking to sell my HVX200 and switch to a 7D right now.

Does anyone have any good guesses (and reasoning) as to whether the Scarlet fixed could still possibly come in under $5K?

I initially thought the fixed Scarlet for $3k would be ready to use out of the box much like a prosumer camcorder without the need for additional accessories other than CF cards and optional enhancements. That was my assumption based on the suggestion that 'soccer mums' might use it - although I'm not at all sure where this idea came from or if there was ever any real substance for the prospect.

Hopefully we'll have some hard facts on the 30th of November.

Yes, I think the 'soccer mum' quote from Ted got our false hopes up. Jarred just said explicitly that they did never aim for a consumer market (if I got him right) so 'soccer mum' is either a curiously named profession in the video field or the soccor mum was an idea that just didn't make it into production.

So let's just wait another month and see what we'll end up with and then plan from there. I got some work for the next few months that I can still produce with my XL-2 while I'm preparing for my exam.

I am trying to figure out why people are complaining about the 2/3 sensor when we all mesmerized at the lizard video red had released, am i wrong to assume it was a scarlet with the smaller sensor? And in other forums I had asked that if you bought a scarlet with a 2/3 sensor as the brain and wanted to upgrade do you have to buy a whole new brain or are the sensors swappable up to a certain size.

I made the following guess-timation over at Scarletuser...Don't know if anyone will find this speculation useful, but here I go anyway:

Fixed 2/3" Scarlet (with my speculated "mild price increase") - $3500
2.8" LCD - $900
Scarlet Module Adapter - $300
Battery Module (with 2 Standard Batteries) - $1250
Side CF Module - $500
Redmote (For actually pressing Start/Stop) - $550
4-Pack of 16GB CF Cards - $1400

This kit totals at - $8400 (£5250)

And I reckon that is as cheap as it's gonna get. I'm assuming that Scarlet will come with some kind of XLR input or some sort of Mic input, because I'd rather not shell out $1750 for an I/O module just to connect a shotgun mic.

The RED Side Handle seems kind of pointless to buy if your planning on going for a budget 2/3" Because:

1. Essentially (in my opinion) it's for those who will be doing A LOT of photography as well, as it gives the Scarlet a bit of a DSLR Form Factor, and from what I understand, the 2/3" won't produce too many GREAT still images, compared to the Video it will produce.

2. From what I understand, the RED Side Handle only houses batteries, not memory, and I don't think it comes with a battery when you purchase it...or does it have a built in battery?
At least with the battery module, you're getting 2 Batteries WITH it.

It's also important to remember that earlier this year, RED had a 2/3" Fixed "Kit" that cost $750 more than the simple 2/3" Fixed Scarlet...And if I remember correctly, that included a memory module, a battery module and some sort of viewing option.

Jerrod Cordell over at Scarletuser pointed out a very interesting prospect:

Also factor in a discount since it is a kit. For example, the RED Base Production Pack is $1250, but with all of the accessories separate it comes out to $2730. That's a 46% discount.

Again, this is all speculation, but if RED uses the same price pattern then the Kit should be $1334 ($1081 minus the Redmote). So this will keep your price pretty nice.

So hopefully there will be some kind of "Discount Kit" available...

I should add again, this is ALL speculation...

Hey Ally (or Ameer?),

you make a valid point.

My example with the red handle was as "the cheapest working solution". So I was rather making compromises towards functionality than towards the amount of money spent. Your example will definitely work better but it already has some "luxurities" built in. Sure, 4 CF cards are cheaper in the set then one bought individually but if you want to just get started (without making money off your camera) then one might be enough (maybe 2). And the red-handle as energy source + a battery is probably cheaper than the batterymodule with 2 battery + the adapter that you then need. Again your solution gives you more for your money in the long run but it is more to spend initially.
The RedMote is not needed to start/stop. There is a button on the right side of each brain.

I like your idea about the "discount" and hope that something like that comes up (we'll see at the end of this month). So far I just trust RED to do whatever is possible.
I'll do everything to make my dream of owning a Scarlet possible. And every dollar saved shortens the time until I can finally afford it.

Other than that I'm just impressed with what an undertaking RED has started with all these lenses, modules and functions built into these cameras. There is NOTHING comparable to that in the industry as far as I know. Not even in the most expensive cameras. I hope that this stuff will all come out soon just to silence all these "vaporware" voices once and for all...

Ron, you upgrade by buying a brain complete. All the lens mounts and accessories are interchangeable. Changing sensor also requires a change in processing circuitry to support it, so this is the most economical way to package an upgrade. Any potential savings in hardware cost would be exceeded by the labor cost to strip and rebuild a brain with new guts.

Yeah, from what I understand the redmote isn't needed to start/stop, the side handle should have that. Also, I don't know if it would be worth it to purchase 4 CFs card. That might be more worth it to rent if you're working gigs with it. Those two items taken off right there should shave almost $2000 off the price.

On an important note, the body is expected to be around 5-6 pounds. That's even heavier than a Canon 1D. For studio shoots that might work out, but I use my camera equipment for personal use, as I'm sure lots of us consumer/prosumer level guys do. Lugging 5 pounds (that's without a lens) all day for fun doesn't sound like....well, fun. I'm starting to rethink just how realistic it would be for me to use a Scarlet as a still camera.

I've been pretty patient like a lot of us and had expected the Scarlet release date to have been announced Oct 30th. After that anti-climax and being told the release date might come Nov 30th, that kind of means the Scarlet won't probably be available until late Dec at the absolute earliest (and history hasn't been that great on this matter). My HVX200 is depreciating as it is and I'm looking to just switch to the 7D now and avoid the bigger hit if I were to switch from HVX to Scarlet directly down the road. The price sure is right =)

They have said the fixed KIT is an out of the box KIT.

So :Fixed 2/3" Scarlet (with the other posters speculated "mild price increase") - $3500
2.8" LCD - $900 INCLUDED
Scarlet Module Adapter - $300 DON'T NEED
Battery Module (with 2 Standard Batteries) - $1250 DON'T NEED
Side CF Module - $500 INCLUDED
Redmote (For actually pressing Start/Stop) - $550 DON'T NEED but worth having
4-Pack of 16GB CF Cards - $1400 YES DO THIS

So I ASSUME the kit includes an LCD, the side CF module, the side handle and a battery. You have a lens to focus the image, a brain to see it, a slot to put something in to record it, a place to put a battery to make the whole thing work and a button to hit so the whole thing goes. In addition it can accept audio in and out and even give you a monitor out. You don't NEED anything else. This is exactly the configuration of an HVX.

I assume the mild price increase to hit (lets aim realistically) at $4,500. Plus the 4 16gb cards at $1,400 and you are up and working for $5,900.

NOT $8k.
