I'm planning on buying VF's FF (whenever it's available) but I need something now. What's the cheapest FF I can get, knowing I'm going to replace it probably in 6 months?

THANKS! :)

THE cheapest? Probably an Indian knockoff on eBay or the INDIE one or whatever. The cheapest that most people will admit to using is the Redrock Micro. Above that is Cavision, then going into Petroff, Chrosziel, a few other random ones and then arriving at Arri.

Don't forget eBay. I was able to get a lovely double-sided Arriflex FF2 for $1200.

yes, the CHEAPEST. Arri, Cavision, Chroszail need not apply. Indian knock off sounds about right. :)

Super-cheap follow focus units are simply not reliable. You're better off not using a follow focus at all and just turning the focus ring on the lens by hand. It'll also save you the cash you would have spent buying the piece of junk in the first place.

Redrock Micro's FF is about the only inexpensive one that has any sort of usefulness or value.

Redrock Micro for sure. . . but you'll need a 15mm adapter if you don't want to mod it.

Damn Shawn, I paid a lot more than that for a used ff2!

hehe, I know, the FF2 regularly goes for $2k-$3k'ish. I am unnaturally skilled in the black art of eBay.

The cool thing is those Indian knock-off cranks and whips fit my Arriflex! They even look good too, $35 apiece.

Zacuto mini follow focus, $1100. good build quality for the money.

Hi Peter,

Just curious...any idea how the Zacuto FF compares to the RedRock?

Thanks!

I used a JBK unit years ago and returned it after a day. Perhaps he has improved his product since then but at the time I considered it unusable.

The Zacuto is a better, tighter unit than the Red Rock and is priced more accordingly.

The MFF-1 is more expensive of course but it blows them all away in a scale far beyond the price difference.

Buy my RedRock used when I get my VF FF. Should be within a couple weeks. You can mount it right to a universal mount and use it on RED with no modifications. Plus you get a free 15mm rod adapter at the same time. It's actually a very cool little solution.
