Yes James, you have every right to rent your gear on whatever basis makes sense to you. Free country and all that.

Justin also has the right to be upset that your choices are driving down the market and thereby making it more difficult for others to pay their bills. Keep in mind that even if you only rent out your kit a couple days a month, every producer in town uses your rates to bargain the rest of us lower.

If you don't like the blowback I suggest you market your services elsewhere. BTW, are you a RedUser sponsor? Using this resource to buy and sell things the way one might use a classified ad is kosher, using it as a free advertising platform for an ongoing business is something else. I appreciate the fact that you have spread out your posts over time, and on several occasions had "news" about your rental kit to report. I am by no means accusing you of rampant abuse. What I am saying, is that if you decide to use RedUser for your commercial purposes you might just have to accept some criticism as part of the territory.

Cheers - #19

I wasn't aware that there were guidelines to posting in this section. Are we not allowed to update our posts? Are bumps not allowed? I'm perfectly fine with them deleting this thread anyways; as I said, it's not as if I'm getting rentals and if people like Justin are going to call me a "loser" (even if he did edit his post after) in the process then I'll just move on. You stated he's allowed to criticize, but I don't find that to be criticism, let alone constructive criticism.

As it stands this thread is simply more embarrassing than anything. Mods, can we either delete this discussion due to its irrelevance to the thread or simply delete the thread entirely? I decided to rent my gear out so that I can make an extra buck on my days off while also trading favors and networking, but neither has happened frequent enough to stand for the slandering of my name.

The only guidelines for posting in this section is that you have to be renting out a RED camera kit of some kind. Other than that, it doesn't matter who you are or how you go about your business. Justin is entitled to his opinion, but he's out of line by crashing into your thread. It's a free market and you can rent your gear for $5/day if you choose. This is a cyclical discussion that never seems to go away. Blair points out that your rates, whether your gear is being rented or not, are factored along with everyone else's and used to direct the market. People see someone advertising a low rate and they use it to try and strike a bargain with their preferred rental provider.

Your rates are cheap, but hardly the lowest I've seen.

Agreed, there are some people renting out Scarlet packages for $100 a day here in NYC. So yeah......

I apologize for the original post. I speak my mind a bit to freely sometimes (after a few beers) and I apologize. I can't say it better then the other guys. It's the Walmart way. I wish you the best and hope you shoot often with your gear and don't get bogged down with renting your gear. Enjoy your camera and be careful when renting it out. You might get $600, but all it takes is one dumb ass to put you out of business for months on an insurance claim.. Sorry to derail your thread.
