Hey guys

Just looking for a B cam to pair with my Epic-w that wasn't super expensive. Under $6k Seeing what you guys were working with to pair and get footage somewhat close. Thanks for the recommend.

I would second the choice to get a BMD Ursa Mini Pro.

However, if that's still out of your price range, I would look at the GH series from Panasonic.

Is also mentioned it the test above, when going GH, go GH5s, it has bigger pixels.

I'm really happy with the A7s2 (for that budget) to bad they didn't test it. I would be interested to see it against the GH5

So are we (we have 2 of them), advantage of the GH5s over the A7S2 is the better codec: 10 bit longGOP 4.2.2 150Mbit/s vs. 8 bit longGOP 4.2.0 100Mbit/s.

They are both very good low-light camera's.

With good light conditions they are no match for the BMD UMP (16 bit RAW, 12 bit,10 bit ProRes) with respect to color, dynamic range and overal picture quality.

Rich: I have Epic-W and Ursa Mini Pro (for rent or sale) - haven't done any side by side yet but plan to shortly.

Ursa Mini pro is a pretty nice complement to Epic-W. It has raw capability as well as ProRes and DnxHD - ability to use CFast, SD, or SSDs for Recording. And can sometimes be a little easier to use with the built-in NDs, XLR inputs, LCD, traditional video style buttons and knobs, etc.

Where we use it as our A-Cams, for bigger budget shots it is often use it as a B-Cam but not always mentioned (Ursa mini 4.6k was used in Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri).

We’ve got 2x dragons and an Ursa Mini, for the money nothing comes close to the Ursa. Colour sub sampling is excellent.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you could look at Kinefinity... on paper they’re pretty stacked: 6k (with an interchangeable mount that allows E-mount and focal reducers for FF35/VistaVision 6k), 21W power draw (which means 2hour runtime on their 45wh handle battery), readily available and cheap SSD media, raw/prores/cineform, 4K/100fps, ~14stops, decent ISO performance, and only 2.1lbs!!! They have $6k for 6k and $4k for 4K version.

That said, I’ve never seen one in real life, never mind used it on a production, so it could be complete garbage. Who knows.

OH and i’d Definitely wait for NAB. BMD has to drop an inexpensive FF35/VV camera sooner or later.

How is the URSA mini pro in low light? Does it have any aliasing issues?

It's not a low light camera, but because of the strong codec (RAW) and dynamic range it's on the level of the average human eye.
It doesn't have an OLPF so resolution is really great, but sometimes some aliasing might occur.

Just download the test sample mentioned in #2 and see for yourself.
Or check youtube, lots of material.

Some footage from the UMP 4,6k

This is a 90 minute movie with a budget under a $ 100.000

Camera's UMP 4,6k (CinemaDNG RAW 3:1), lenses Sigma 18...35 and 50...100

An entire movie for less than the price of a Monstro or Alexa LF.

URSA Mini 4.6K, URSA Mini Pro, Kinefinity Terra 4K, Kinefinity Terra 6K, Canon C200B would be my top sub $6K choices.

If you can stretch it a little more than then the Panasonic EVA1 or the very popular Sony FS7 are worth a look.

But also, do you need to spend all your budget. A Panasonic GH5S is very capable, and if you just need an occasional B cam then the GH5S could make a lot of financial sense.

Philip Bloom has been testing a Kinefinity Terra 4K out, and he is loving it.

For sure NAB will be interesting as always! Only a few weeks away.

Also Kinefinity is dropping a new camera in a few more days, is rumored to be their most expensive one yet (and thus their best ever? If it is going to justify its price).
