  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cheaper alternatives to Dedolights?

I have 5 Source4 minis: 2x 19°, 1x 35°, and 2x 50°. I have also downgraded the wattage in the 19° instruments to 35W so that they mix better with the 50W 50° instruments. But ergonomically, the tiny form factors makes them really fidgety, so after spending many patient hours getting the shutters and angles adjusted just so, I leave them alone. The full-sized Source4s are much easier to manipulate, and throw a lot more light, so I use those for "real" illumination, and leave the minis to do (fixed) environmental highlights.

Here's a Source4 mini illuminating a studio monitor:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they don't seem to have a simple solution to be battery powered?

The new dedolight are really expensive when you compare with the rest of the market.
Litepanel released a 3 light kit for $900 (however I'm not sure you will have a big output from 6xAA batteries)

Those looks interesting and more affordable, are they comparable in features/performance?

B&H has them list even cheaper, but no reviews sadly (but fair enough, only got announced a couple of weeks ago!):

Have a battery powered option, and are meant to be flicker free at any FPS:

What makes the dedo's so attractive is their output and ability to easily shape it. The 150W units put out 2-3X the output of the Litepanels when flooded and nearly 8X the spot output. Just look at the photometrics and you'll see the efficiency of dedo's lens technology. They're hard to replace, especially given how robust they are and the beauty of the kit with all the accessories. The output is also enough that you can drop their dichroic daylight lens in and still output more than most 150's, especially if you'd have to gel the comparable light.

Their 3 light is one of the best investments in lighting gear IMO. Maybe one day they'll release an LED equivalent with variable color. That'd be huge.
