We need to possibly rent or buy a waterproof bag for an upcoming shoot. It does not need to be submersible for more than a meter(3 feet) and not for and extended amount of time.

Thanks in advance

Go to Wal Mart and buy a clear vinyl shower curtain. Buy hard/soft side velcro, 1".

Build your camera on sticks.

Drape curtain over camera. Cut accordingly and use velcro along edges.

COST: maybe $30 (curtain is around $8, velcro at WM costs $18)
TIME to make it: Depends on you but it usually takes me about 15 min to construct...

It works and works well.

thank you for the suggestion, we need to be able to hand hold it though, and deal with water up to our chest or so.

In that case, I don't think you want a cheap splashbag...

Lmao!! I can't believe you actually got a reply! I wouldn't try that with my $10 vhsc camera...

I meant more cheapin the sense of rental, not necessarily buy. Anyways thanks guys, I guess the gates is going to be about the only way to go.

Absolutely not a submersible waterproof enclosure, but most of the wildlife cameramen I've ever worked with just carry a spare poncho for when it rains.

You may laugh, but tape the poncho neck to the lens hood, tape an arm hole to the eyepiece, and drape the rest over the camera and you have a light weight rain proof shell that fits almost any camera set up, lens and all.

Ryan: We also rent our housings. The aluminum version is a bit smaller and lighter weight than the Gates, but our PVC version is MUCH lighter and has been used on many surf and pool shoots. It is a hard housing, so not as light as a bag style but is also fully waterproof and capable of depths up to 225 feet standard. Rental is $550/day 1900/week.

Stock setup is most suitable for superwide lenses like the Arri 8R, 10mm 2.1 or 12mm 2.1 (maybe a 14) where you don't focus much but several users have also setup with Preston, Bartech, Heden etc. motor systems for other lenses. You can also use the RED 18-50 and others with the base controls if you don't have to rack focus, but without gears or motors rack focusing is a bit cumbersome and slow. The camera show has the birger mount and a tokina 11-16 and we have full control of focus and iris via the birger mount for any Canon EF lens.

This is what we do on LOST for rain covers.... Believe it or not, it works well.

I wouldn't go into chest deep water with it but I can hand hold it and keep the camera dry. Hell, this rain cover kept the camera bone dry after sitting in a 2 hour down pour on top of a mountain on Kaua'i (wettest place on earth).

This is one instance where I'm not a snob and you get more than what you paid...
