I want to congratulate Marine DPs Mike Ozier and Mike Prickett for their incredible use of the size and power of the Epics. We couldn't have gotten half the shots with a larger camera system. We lived between Santa Cruz and Mavericks from October till March this year. All custom made underwater housings by Sonny Miller. I count myself lucky for being asked to be apart of such a great project.

Somehow I didn't hear about this production when it was first announced. I would have liked to contribute some Epic cinematography for it. I've been shooting stills and motion footage of waves and surfing worldwide for my entire career. I've shot Mavericks many times with Red cameras, including the maxed-out size (50' plus wave faces) 2010 Mavericks contest, which I shot in 4k with a Red One. I know the pro surfers really well who surfed for this film - Peter Mel, Greg Long, etc., and I knew and filmed many times before he died the surfer the film centers around - Jay Moriarty.

BTW - Mike Prickett and Sonny Miller are longtime professional associates of mine. Mike has shot water footage off and on since the mid-90's for me and the action sports TV program crews I was working on in Hawaii. The last time he shot Red camera water footage for me was in December 2007, when I field produced and directed a 3-Red One production of the ASP Pipeline Masters surfing contest on the North Shore of Oahu.

The last time Sonny Miller shot with me was in 1997 in South Africa, on an ESPN TV production featuring an ASP professional surfing contest at Jeffries Bay. Sonny shot water camera for us, then went along and shot with us on a wildlife safari where we filmed tons of big game animals.

We saw Chasing Mavericks a few nights ago in Santa Barbara and the water photography was really top notch. Sonny and Mike's work was great. Finally a Hollywood surf movie that is convincing to real surfers. Hoping Mike recovers from his dive accident.
