  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Changing Timecode in RedCine-X

anyone?

or how do you guys do it? (not using FCP), on R3D files? if visual slate TC is not matching the camera (often the case on music video playback song shoots), how do u manually change R3D TC?

EDIT: i guess i can always set a slate point on pic & on audio track and sync like that, but still sync by TC numbers if it could be changed manually should be standard way to go.

I wouldn't recommend changing the timecode in the R3D files - also, the visual timecode on the slate doesn't match the timecode on the audio (BWF) either in many cases. what counts is the actual timecode in the BWF audio file and picture - when syncing by eye an ear what is the timecode relationship and offset if not in sync? Are any of those even close to the visual? As I mentioned in a different but similar thread, rarely have I seen all three match up in the course of the many productions I have done. What matters is having the ability to track the timecodes for each picture and sound sources and that the dailies are in sync. Even when AutoSyncing by timecode, I always create tighter sync down to the 1/4 frame within the NLE.

how would you go about syncing dailies then?
suppose it's a playback shoot with slate showing the song timecode and camera running it's own, production requesting for transcodes to be synced with the song.
i'd change the r3d TC to match the slate and sync to the song by TC then.
that's the way i do it in FCP on quicktimes.

i guess i could set slate points on both image(slate tc) & song in redcine and sync by that & then transcode, but still seems a TC change is a common feature to have, no?

Well I guess it depends on the NLE being used. In Media Composer I enter the playback timecode from the slate as an AuxTC then use that to group my camera angles on with multicamera. That way I am tracking all original source timecode as well as a playback to use as needed. I am not sure if FCP has a similar method.

that's the issues i sometimes run into. i use FCP where TC can easily be changed on QT but not on R3Ds. but often for playback shots, the transcodes are requested to be synced with the song. when i'm transcoding to QT ProRes, i can easily do so in FCP, but from time to time MXF's are requested for avid (i dont use) and there's no easy way in RCX to change the TC to sync and transcode from there directly without having to go to fcp or avid for that.

That's not quite the way I was saying it worked - in Media Composer this is "relational" metadata that I can add from the slate, but it never changes the original timecode. That way I can always manage the original sources as well as have sync relationships established as needed.
