Hello, i am just wondering - is it possible at all to change redfile names for FCP to accept them?

The boss wants all file names to conform to company policy, for filing purposes, even if it means changing the names of all the original media on the red drives.

And if it isn't possible, why is this? is it because the meta data relates to the original file name the camera creates?

I realize there might have been discussion on this already, but a quick google search came up with nothing, and i am on a tight deadline to try and sort this out.

So thanks in advance :)

As far as I understand, you can change the names but it becomes a pain to conform

I wouldn't recommend it as many of the file-based workflows depends on that file name for conform etc. It would be like changing the file names found in the P2 or XDCAM structure...

Use Clipfinder (if on Mac) to log additional metadata, export as a comma or ALE file and use that as part of your database for searching and archive.

Just a totally bad idea.

Leave the filenames as is and then use a program like clipfinder to create a custom field with whatever information you want to add and then import that tab de-liniated field into FCP or AVID or what ever.

Thanks guys, i also think it's a bad idea. But to present my case to the boss, i just want to be 100% sure why.

If we're changing the names on all of the original media folders and files before we transfer and edit, and we're not making any DPX files, how will changing the names effect the conforming process?

make a copy of three small takes
then change the name of the duplicates and cut a small timeline and test out your highly unconventional workflow...if it works, do it for everything, if not, at least you know and you didnt screw yourself.

our experience tells us never to do what you suggest.

Yep thanks Dino. Like i said i would prefer not to do it this way, not my idea or workflow.

But still no one has answered my last question?
