Changing Name in Log & Transfer Window

Hello,

Pretty simple but important question here. I am about to log a feature film via the Log & Transfer --> ProResHQ route. We want to be able to go back to the R3D for the film out or HDCAM SR.

When I am in the Log and Transfer window, on the right hand side I can enter the properties (name, clip, scene, take). The NAME field auto populates with the clip name that the RED generated, but I want to change it to our scene number (1A-1 or whatever). Will this cause problems reconnecting to the R3D later down the road?

I exported an XML file after doing a test of this and I found paths to the original source buried in metadata, but I was hoping to get a second opinion.

Thanks a bunch!

You'll probably have to manually track the original R3D name against you renamed clip in order to relink later. As of FCP 7 none of the RED metadata is viewable inside FCP (although it can be viewed with miniME (Metadata Explorer). The demo (free) from http://assistedediting.com/miniME/ will export that metadata to an excel spreadsheet for you.

You can rename anything inside of FCP, as long as you don't rename the files in the finder re-conforming with Clipfinder will work fine.

This was my thought, though I wonder if Crimson would work as well. From the FCP Paper:

"The name of each R3D file is used to create the universally unique ID number (UUID) which is also referred to as the Clip ID for each ingested clip. This ID number, which is not user-accessible, is used to track the correspondence between ingested clips and the original source media from which it came. This means you can rename clips as you ingest them, or afterward, without losing the correspondence between a clip's UUID tag and the name of the original R3D file."

I interpret that as saying even though I can't find the UUID inside FCP (From item properties) if I rename the clip inside the L&T window, its still there.

If you use L&T, do not truncate the clips or rename them in the L&T tool. You can make sub-clips or rename clips after the fact, and like the other poster mentioned, only rename clips, not the file in the finder.

To use Crimson, make sure if you've sub-clipped shots, you remove sub-clip limits from the clips in your final sequence before you export the XML from FCP.
