Hi Guys,

I'm about to shoot a music video on scarlet. We'll do the whole thing in 2K but some of the shots have to be 60 fps while most of them will be shot 24fps.
From Red One I know that changing the framerate is taking quite some time as redcode had to be reselected and mag had to be formatted.
My question:

When shooting on scarlet, can I simply change the framerate and go on shooting or will it take me the whole procedure?

Greets from Germany!

Hi Tillmann,

send you a message.

Tilmann - even on the RED ONE you do not have to reformat the media to change resolution. I have frequently recorded various resolutions on the same media without having to reformat it...
My concern is why would you record 2K? Are You delivering in 720P or a lower resolution? If You delivery is 1080P - You should record at least 3K (I know for the 60P shots you will need to use 2K, but for the 24P's I would definitely use 3K or even better - 4K)...
Oversampling is a great way to increase DR, reduce noise and sharpen - resulting in far greater image quality...

Agreed, don't shoot lower resolution unless you need the framerate. Period!
Shooting higher resolution also offers room for stabilizing and re-framing.

And hey, it's more future-proof.

True, but if Discspace and Offload-Times are an issue (lets say 2 x 64 GB SSD) i would opt for smaller res too ... from time to time
Dont forget: Not everybody own one of these slick Pelis filled with 10 x 256 GB ;-)

I do live on 2 cards currently (a 64 and a 128), but i'm not really a professional, hehe. I don't know how long your takes are, but i can't imagine much scenarios where i couldn't go with those 2 cards and a cheap notebook with USB3/FW or eSATA.

For file-size i would start to choose higher compression-ratios, not lower the resolution in first place. But thats an opinion without real scientific tests behind it. But especially when the final result is "just" HD, there would be still the benefits of 4k. And if i really have to lower the resolution, i would go to 3k, not lower (unless fps is needed). ;)
