Hello

lately I had the opportunity to shoot the new Chanel haute couture show spring-summer 2009 for director Xavier Arias and production company Orange-Films Paris.

Along with my assistants Raphael Palin and Pierre Jouvion we configured 5 REDCams with Optimo- and Cooke-Zooms to shoot the 20min show in 4K on Red drives.

Some of the rushes transfered immediately on HD-Cam were delivered to TV stations and used for a teaser on the Chanel website the same night.

The complete film was edited on proxies in FCP and color-graded on Scratch in 2K for a distribution in the Chanel show-rooms and on DVD.

You can see the final film via the link below:

Elegant, great, what kind of lighting did you have ?
What f/stop, what ASA rating ?

Nice !!

HMI lighting ? How much did you put the saturation down to be so "white and black" ?

Dear friends

thanks for Your noumerous reactions.

The lighting has been done as usual at Chanel shows along with the production design by Villa Eugenie. In opposition to the Grand Palais shows, this time all the light has been tungsten and I just had to balance the intensity along the catwalk with my lightmeter.
I exposed on 200ASA with F.stops around 4. Smart focuspullers worked on each camera asides the operator.
Chanel likes black&white a lot, so desaturation is often a viable option. But it has been done in colorgrading by colorist Jean-René Nebot. Masks have been utilised a lot to darken the much too present public in wider shots.

Sorry for the "old grey compression blockiness" which is due to the flash conversion for web and inexistant on the original footage.

Very Nice work!!

Thanks for posting! What lens types?

One of the things you can do in a situation like this create mask of the background and apply lots of blur, thus simulating a very shallow depth of field on the subject. There's only a couple of shots that you can see the compression really kicking in.
