Any DOP saying, in this day and age, I only shoot HD for vimeo or TV based solely on the fact that that is the end delivery resolution, does not deserve to work in this industry.

David, you seem more intelligent than to misquote.

I just object to the implication that not choosing to work at the highest resolution possible somehow disqualifies you from being a DP, or that this industry can't accept a variety of opinions on the matter, or that people who shoot HD for HD broadcast are somehow unworthy. There are plenty of great cinematographers out there who can have a different opinions on the resolution issue, and some of their opinions are different from mine, but I'm not going to say that therefore they don't deserve to be cinematographers.

One thing we have to remember is that Zacuto calls this "The Great Camera Shootout". Steve, I respect and, like I said previously, love your web series and work as well as your gear, but have to say that this is marketed as a "Camera Shootout". If such, you should've displayed each camera at their best. You can argue about sound, about composition, about the talent over the gear any way you want, but then don't market this as the "Great Camera Shootout" and market it as "Great DOP's with Great cameras give's us a glimpse of their art" or something like that.

Well, I don't think David or any other professional DP chooses a camera solely for that reason. However, workflow can play a role in it. But there are a lot of other factors that go into choosing one camera over another, so I guess I understand what you're saying but I think it comes off the wrong way.

No implication intended. That is an assumtion based on your behalf.

For sure. But it's a simple point and i feel a lot of DOP's are giving the wrong impression to younger people and a lot of companies are taking advantage of this to sell false dreams.

This has gotten out of control apparently.

Several companies have refused to participate. And the real message has been clouded.

Resolution is not everything. But it is something.

Dynamic range matters. So does the "feel" of the image.

Frame rates matter.

Size matters.

Price matters.

Upgrades matter.

Support matters.

Community matters.

We are going to take down our offer to do a comparison test at RSH. The grief and complication doesn't warrant the effort.

I hope that everyone can do some testing on their own that includes all aspects of testing. We just aren't up for the grief. We have better things to do.

I know I'm on a RED forum, but for the moment I need to be very objective for a second.

If we want to play this 4K angle, then isn't only fair then to match up 4K cameras. Doesn't this become a shootout between F65, Epic, maybe Penelope, and any other 4K camera that is out there, ready to compete. Maybe Epic shouldn't be in the Zacuto shootout. I'm not saying I feel that way, I'm just saying if we're going to have a level playing field, maybe that's what it should be. 4K+ cameras, shown in 4K, apples to apples. Does that change the game?

Okay, I'm back now. :-)

Until I tap 20% of the awesome potential of Epic . . . I don't give a shit about tests of other equipment. Steady as she goes Captain Jim

See new post.
