CF cards and Build 16

So I start another RED feature in two weeks and this one has a lot of driving scenes where I'll probably have to use CF cards. Can one use the RED 8GB CF cards with Build 16?

Also, can one use an extension cable with the RED Drives to keep the driving farther from the camera? For example, if the camera were on a hood mount of the picture car, could one cable to a hard drive on the camera car? Do they make cables that are, let's say, 6' and 12' long?

I have a lot of night work -- how does Build 16 look at 640 ASA?

CF cards do work, depending on your shooting settings of course.

The Drive cables are limited to the max length the SATA signal can travel (currently 1m)

640 is ok, as long as you plan on squashing some of the blacks or doing a noise reduction in the transfer.

Both 8 and 16GB cards will work on build16.

David, I just had a night shoot with car interiors on a low loader on the RED-drive, and got a lot of errors (long takes) so I decided to have the drive in the pocket of my jacket which worked fine, no errors after that. Later I put the drive on the mini cine saddle (cinekintitc tiny saddle or micro saddle ) tied on the craddle and no problems after that. I have to admit though that I still rate the Red lower than 320 since there is more noise than Vision 3. This all at B16 3.1.6.

For best exposure, set 320 ASA, which gives about equal headroom in blacks and highlights. At 640 ASA you are likely to have some noise (clip blacks) if you want to bring out details in shadows. Either way, I found that there is a fair bit of headroom in Red RAW, so "fix it in post" is not as stupid as it sounds :biggrin:

In an interview on this week's FXGuide RedCenter Podcast, DOP Peter Holland was saying how he's currently testing for his next Red Feature, and shooting car scenes with the Red Drive to test for dropped frames.
He claims that removing the drive from the cradle and mounting it direct to the camera (can't remember what method he said he used....) created ZERO dropped frames in all his testing, allowing him to shoot 4K for prolonged periods for night shooting.

dont shoot on a car mount and expect good footage, it will not work on red drive. I have done it. does not work. gotta keep that drive away from vibration.

I shot a Ducati motorcyle spec spot on the back of a U-Haul trailer and had serious dropped frames with the RED Drive. After wrapping the drive in a terrycloth towel and taping it to the camera, I experienced zero dropped frames.

There is a little extra space in the drive cradle where, if your 1st a.c. removes the slide mount hardware, a bit of padding could fit around the inserted drive. I will be experimenting with that myself. Otherwise, I'm going to machine a custom cradle with room for padding.

Other things that can cause RED Drive to skip: car tire screeching in garages, a female scream in a small bathroom... Both solved with a sound blanket or other barrier to break up standing waves in the space.

I think this information is not right. At ISO320 (camera ASA320) you have +3.5 stops over mid grey and at least -6 in the shadows. It is extremely clean, but it´s not balanced at all.

I have experienced zero dropped frames on a car mount with the drive wrapped in bubble wrap and taped to the top rods. CF is still probably recommended though. We weren't doing any stunts.
