  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CF card or SSD size? And will FF35 have any auto focus?

Anyone have any idea what will be the largest sized CF card or SSD that comes out during this 2009 calendar year. And is the Scarlet supposedly able to handle 1 or 2 CF cards?

I am trying to find a way to get at least 1 hour of continuous video on a storage source before changing. I shoot concerts and want to get every second in between songs as well..continuous recording.

One more thing. Will the Scarlet FF35 have AUTO FOCUS for live event shooting? Real curious about these 2 questions.

Thanks whomever knows or wants to speculate-

I don't think there will be an Autofocus for the FF35, as it depends on the Lens how this works. and RED can not build every way Lenses work in. I think the only RED with Autofocus may be the fixed scarlet, as they know which Lens you use :-) I don't know if there is a Standard focus connector, but I think Red would need to license Connectors for Autofocus. And I don't think this will happen.

It was said that the old Scarled would have 2 Slots for CFs. But shouldn't this be no Problem at all, as you can stack (at a cost of cause) two or more CF Monts and use them one after another?

Yes, there will be Autofocus on the FF35.

Check out RED's Electronic Lenses (FF35 Format). The AF means Auto Focus.

Sure, but will AF functionality be available while shooting motion and not just for stills? We don't know that yet. The cine crowd scoffs at such a notion, but ENG, and to a lesser extent EFP, shooters would really appreciate this. It would be one aspect of the DSMC system to really differentiate from lower cost alternatives from Nikon / Canon.

Good point. I was assuming that the AF functionality will be available while shooting motion. I was planning on skipping the RED primes and getting the FF35 set instead. Not really planning on using the still mode very much.

I am confident that Graeme will come up with an AF function that not only works for video, but works really well. Even if it only works with RED Electronic lenses and needs an additional rangefinder module or something similar.

An option for auto focus on the FF35 would be amazing for those live events some of us cover and then go to manual to do the cinema type shots....one camera many options!

From what I understand, AF on motion (especially at 120fps or higher) would be a hard feat to pull off. Would be great to have though! :)

There is a module to hold 2 CF cards, and another to hold SSD's of at least 128 GB. Plus, I think I heard that you will be able to stack several of these modules. Maybe it will allow swapping CF cards while recording to the other one. In this case, tally (i.e., activity) lamps on the slots would be nice, so you remove the correct one.

Thing is I need the Scarlet to be very small and yet still able to handle recording at least 1 hour clips at a time. And at roughly 100GB per hour...I guess I need storage in that area. I also need the batteries to be able to last for 2 hours...again I run and gun and don't have room to carry much if anything. Small and efficient.

Now how cool would a concert look with an FF35 Scarlet! Ok I may settle for the 2/3" but the ultimate would be the FF35 and auto focus and 256GB of storage in a real small form factor.
