Hi

Someone already tried to use the Compact Flash with RED instead of using the card's own RED 16GB?

It worked normally?

Thks

Non-red manufactured CF cards are supposed work in 2K mode only in build 17 at your own risk. However I think some people are using Lexar cards at 4K still.

Most cards aren't fast enough for 4k. There are a few that are now, but we can't keep track of them since the industry changes so quickly. The camera will tell you if the card is fast enough or not by limiting the frame rate options if the card is too slow.

All we know for sure is that ours work.

Does this mean the camera is doing a real time speed check on insertion? I was under the assumption ( with all that that entails! :) ) that there's a verified card list in the camera's firmware and if your card isn't on the list, it limits it to 2K. Am I wrong?

Cheers,

Paul

Hi

It's my first post here, although I was reading reduser.net since the beginning. Just never had anything to say as I was waiting to get my hands on the camera. That should happen next week :D

Anyway, just to join the question about 3rd party CF cards - would this work if connected in place of CF reader on the SATA interface. Or would it get the 2K res limit message?

http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/flash_drives/ocz_apex_series_sata_ii_2_5-ssd

The benchmarks on the net caim that the sustained write speed is on a level of 90MB/s, so if the camera is testing the media for speed it should be fine...

Thanks,

I've used the 8GB Lexar UDMA 300x cards on a few shoots with no problems at all. But there were also posts from a while back that some people had problems. Maybe their cards weren't UDMA 300x.

I'm not the only one who has had problems with Lexar UDMA 300x cards. I've had a few go bad and I've had two arrive DOA and they had to be exchanged for ones that work. But most have been fine and all the problems happened with cards from two purchases that were about a week apart. So I'm wondering if some cards were mis-handled or if Lexar had a bad batch.

I think I just got ebay burned. I bought 4 of these 8 GB CF cards and I'm not sure if they are Red legit or knock-offs. Here's what I'm getting:

- 4K 16/9 @ 23.98 with Redcode 28 Redcode 36 won't work.
- 3K 16/9 @ 44 fps (max) with Redcode 28. Redcode 36 won't work.

I'm also a bit dubious of the Lexar logo on the back of the cards (See pic). Unfortunately I can't compare with my other Red CF cards as they were stolen. Yes, I'm a perennial winner of the "lucky bastard" award so don't even attempt to compete.

Any thoughts out there? Are the above specs on par with Red's cards? :help:

Thanks

Well Max FPS on a RED 8GB card should be 36FPS at 3k 19x9 , so you are doing better than you should. Max speed at 4k 16x9 8gb card is 25FPS, so there you go.

Nick

Hope you didn't buy your own stolen CF cards back! :)

Seriously, there is so much theft that we need to consider marking all equipment. Then if you see something on eBay you could at least see that it was marked and turn the seller in.

Thanks guys. I just searched the forum and learned that the 8 GB cards never did Redcode 36 @ 4K. So there ya go. 2009 "Lucky bastard" award still up for grabs.

why couldn't this Sandisk Extreme IV 16gb 300x CF work?
http://www.adorama.com/IDSCF16GE4.html

It says 45MBs and it's under $200. This is the price/capacity point we should be at. Has anyone tried it? If Red isn't artificially rejecting CF cards...which I really hope they aren't...did we get that settled either way?

I have not tried the Sandisk ones, but I believed Deanan said they tested out too slow. Most transfer rates advertised are absolute max or burst rates for the cards, not sustained.

The Lexar 300x UDMA 16GB cards are not as fast as the 8GB cards rated at the same speed. Reading the specs, everything looks hunky-dory, but they're slow in reality. I've had sources tell me they use the same inline memory or FLASH controller as on their 8GB cards and the more capacities go up, the more that controller struggles.

I'm with ya, Shawn... If I could buy 16GB cards that would actually work as well as the current 8GB cards for $200, I'd be there.

The write speed benchmarks look pretty slow for those Transcend cards. It's great they have fast read speed, but that's not what matters the most here.

Shawn pointed out to me that there were earlier Sandisk Extreme IV cards out there that were slower than the current 45MB/s ones. I think these warrant a closer look. I know it's not a proper test in any way, but the FDBench scores posted at mydigitaldiscount claim the the Sandisk Extreme IV 16GB card is writing faster than 39MB/s.

clarification, the Sandisk Extreme IV 8gb was 40MBs and the 16gb is 45MBs.

It's a bummer for the 'value' customer that Red appears to have shifted gears from vetting commercially available CF to doing their own, now they have their own product and R&D costs to protect. Not a slight against them, they've got to make their coin, just a bummer for me who can't throw a few grand just to get a fist full of 16gb cards.

I wonder about someone making a simple device that would have a dummy CF on one end that simply passes a ribbon cable out to small box that would take two or four CF slots and Raid 0 them. You could then use simple 30MBs cards and they'd be able to handle anything Red threw at them.

Or, Red could just release the specs on that Red Drive port and we could make our own devices. :-) come'on guys! free the drive port! :matrix:

The theoretical speed of that port is 3.2gbs per channel right?
