  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Celere lenses by Hanse Inno Tech

It looks to me that the Celere is just softer overall so it falls off quicker. Difficult to say from compressed images. Like I said- aesthetics are personal. Whether it works depends on the specific job. My engineering hat tells me to start with the sharper image off the bat...

In no particular order, here is a smattering of lenses I like a lot.

Zeiss Superspeeds
Leica Summicron C
Leica R
Cooke Speed Panchro series 2/3
Lomo anamorphic
Lomo spherical (wide variations here)
Sigma Art series in particular 18-35 and 50
Canon 70-200 mark II zoom
Tokina 11-20mm f2.8
Zeiss Contax

I was surprisingly blown away by the Sony Cinealtas.

Don't Get me wrong, I like all lenses.

I don't hate Xeen or Rokinon either.

I prefer Rokinons over Xeens though.

I should add, in no way is this any comment on the Celere line of lenses.

I commend Steven and his company for building a line of products they love and care about.

Making any kind of company or product is super difficult and takes a ton of work and tenacity.

I very quickly tossed this little "test" together and by no means would consider it the final word.
However looking at the street lights in the attached image there is a very obvious difference in
the Celere and Xeen lenses.

Could I bother you to share the DNGs?

Thanks.

isnt' this only a focus problem?

I would have to confirm that the focus is not perfect again like I had mentioned I did this very quick primarily to show that interesting flair off the street lights so this was done hand held in about 33 weather with a wife that wasn't very happy

i'll get some other test frames and the test I did under control situation and post a dropbox link to the raw files

Dan thanks for that list and interesting

Novice question :

Could someone explain how at T1.5 I can almost read the two signs in the distance on the Xeen?

At 30ft+? would they not be massively outside the DOF, when the Ball (<4ft?) is the subject in focus?

I would have guessed that T1.5 would look more like the Celere image.

Ball was about 7' from camera and as i confirmed
in my previous post focus on the Celere image was
not nailed. Obviously i should have chosen a better frame.
But again my intent was only to show the massive difference in the flair from
the street lights between the two lenses.

I hadn't realized they're planning anamorphics - that's very exciting. Does anyone know if it would be an independent set of lenses, or front adapters that would modify their mark i or mark ii primes?

Yes sharp frame would be nice.
One could ask:
would the coma on the xeen be better with it out of focus like the celere?
Would the celere coma get worse had it been in focus?
Nobody knows....;-)

Coma didn't change based on focus, .. only on T stop. But I'll post some files tonight when I get back in the office.

That should go a long way towards Celeres "redemption" ;-)

I'm not in my studio and don't have the beach ball files where I can get to them, ..
however I do have some of the other test frames i've placed in a dropbox folder.
Still R3d frames are in folders labeled for each lens.

I am by no means a lens testing guru, .. but sense I had the opportunity to post some data
I hope that it might be worth something to this discussion.

Anyone wants to play with these frames and post them here please feel free.

Pat I'll be at CineGear, ..
