  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CC: Mist effect on skin

I assume it does something like the Tiffen Pro-Mist filters to diffuse and soften images.

The Tiffen filters are used to give a soft atmospheric glow to images.

I've been looking for a tutorial on how to create a good smooth skin effect like that. Color has a few stock smooth skin filters, I've played around with them a bit, changed the values, but can't seem to get it to a point where it really looks good. The smooth skin effect in this video looked awesome. If anyone has any links or info on how to achieve this in Color I'd greatly appreciate it.

at two minutes in this video i made a somewhat similar version of this in after effects

http://www.vimeo.com/15963565

one way is to duplicate the layer - select the skin color with a keyer and make just her skin tone "see through" with a very feathered soft edge - put a blur and a slight curve that is lighter on the layer below - i may have added a third layer on top with just the sharpest blacks of the face on top to get back the sharpness of the eyes

what it did for me in this scene is twofold - got rid of some minor skin imperfections and it gave a little bit of a glow to "glamorize" this one moment

this is not the "right way" to do it - just how I ended up finding my way from photoshop to ae - probably somebody more experienced can chime in with the "proper way" to do it

(that resolve thing looks great anyway)

I can't play the clip where I am right now, but most digital diffusion involves using layers, basically you layer a sharp image and a blurred image over each other, or you create a luminance key (since skintones are often the brighter elements in the frame) and blur just the highlights and layer them back over the sharp layer.

Diffusion filters on a camera lens work on the same principle, some element in the filter blurs detail while clear or open areas allow sharp detail to pass through unaffected. If all the filter did was soften everything, it would just be throwing the image out of focus. True diffusion is the layering of a sharp image over a slightly out-of-focus image.

Thank you all...
So it's a simple smooth skin effect?
I was just wondering cause he said it would be kind of a standart request and technic.
In that case, sure a luminance key and a blur should give nice results.

@P Andersson: Don't get me wrong, but the clips music an feel reminded me of Andrew Blake but more today. I would like to see adults stuff with this look and feel but I assume there wouldn't be a market anymore. What did you shoot with, DSLR right, what lenses?
