  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Catching Up...

I definitely have a lot of reservations about doing business with RED. Obviously I love the technology going into their products, I like that they give some indication of what they are working on. What I don't like is selling unfinished products. I don't like that Jim comes on here and teases about upgrades and updates that never do quite what he claims only to hide behind the "subject to change" disclaimer. Whatever happened to honesty? Either Jim has the most inept engineers working for him who are constantly telling him stuff about the cam that won't ever come to fruition, or he himself is at best stretching the truth about where the camera is headed. Every update to the cam is "the big one" and it turns out the biggest features always get pushed to the next update.

Why should anybody believe their camera is going to ship anywhere near on time based on this? There is a lot of arrogance at RED that starts all the way at the top. "Under-promise, Over-deliver" sounds great but the truth of the matter is you guys have been over-promising and under-delivering far more than the reverse. Read this quote from Jim in March 2007

"1. Getting our camera fully feature enabled at the time of release. That means that the 1st customers will have to bear with us and do software and firmware upgrades for a couple of months. Record RGB is one of these types of features." - Jim

A "couple of months" you say? We are now 7-8 months since the first 25 were delivered, with building 16 supposedly being THE big update, and that seems to have slipped further from where Jim originally indicated it would hit. Realistically we could be looking at 9 months from release to get a "finalized" camera when Jim promised "a couple of months." I will patiently await development at RED before I put in my own personal order, but my company has already canceled it's order and will likely go the rental route for the feature we are doing later this year. Make me believe RED, make me believe.

Wow! What a truly amazing post. It's like JIM ripped you off or something.

Here's some home truths from the top end of the tree.
I've ordered cameras from Arri, they said Id get them in 2 months, 9 months later they showed. I ordered a RED they said I'd get it in 7 months, I waited 8.

Here's another. Work flow and bugs I keep hearing about. We flog the RED, We shoot it rough and don't baby it at all. It's never missed a beat yet. I think we have had to restart it twice a day at most.

Our Arri 435es always has mag jams, film jitter, something stupid always happens every job weather it be big or small. We though we may have had a dud. We bought another one. No difference. Not that the 435 was rubbish, it has been a great camera for many years. but the fact is, they all play up.
We have shot on 35mm for the last 20 years, we put it down to a normal day in the office.

Work flow, Facts are, we can ingest 4 days worth of footage 5 mins after the shoot has ended and start cutting 2k RES in less than 5 seconds.
Show me how you can do that even shooting DV. 35mm is 2 days later.

I think you are truly one of those impatient people that can't see much further than your hand. You hear rumours but have never actually used a RED for any length of time to no any better.
As they say, "A little knowledge is dangerous"

Jim, Can i have this guys cameras please.
No seriously!

Thanks.

LOL!!

It's fun that untill the L&T tool came, you would have a much shorter turnarround with RED 4k sourced footy than even with P2...

You still can...

Gunleik - cool tests on your site. Like the dogs in the snow and water! Obviously does the camera work ;-)

Back on topic, since I´m set back for a couple of weeks with #1809 (grrrr, it really hurts when you allready paid, settled everything and got the mail "your camera will ship within 10 days")
When Red will start shipping the next batch, i hope the accessories, especially Arri 19mm base plate will ship with cameras. Any word on this ?

Manuel

I'd hate to add to your misery but unfortunately the ARRI BP is back ordered as well as the bottom plate to the pro pack.

I'm plateless.....

Being one of the reservation holders that is affected by this delivery schedule "hick-up" I'm wondering why I didn't receive an e-mail about this. Also - why is there no information about this on the RED.com website? I know everything is subject to change but as a customer I feel like I have the right to know if there are any delays. I really don't think that's too much to ask for - not everyone has the time to scour the forums for news like this.

15mm Arri baseplates are in stock. 19mm Arri baseplates are 1-2 weeks out.

As far as I know, everyone who has received the "your camera is almost ready to ship" email is being served. If your number is not up yet, then you're just not up yet, technically you're not affected. The delivery dates have always been stated as tentative or estimated. Current delivery schedule, accounting for the delay, is posted in Big Jon's FAQ. That hardly requires scouring the internet to find it...
