  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Catching Up...

add up all the items, add in the shipping fee and then send them few hundred more and tell them to SHIP as ASAP whatever they have in stock .. while the $$ is in tranport you can work on the final order item by item with RED ... your account will then have a small balance to order cables, lens cap in future .. or you later ask for a refund of the balance... if you want you camera NOW send the $$ forget trying to get a exact to the penny figure - send the $$$$ .. the exact figure to the penny will come (invoice) with the camera ...

This is exactly what I did for my order. I emailed my rep to find out how much $ was in my account (from deposits) and also got my CU # number. I added up my order + shipping + an extra couple hundred, then subtracted my discount + deposits, and wired the total to RED....

Don't forget your CU # on the wire transfer.

EVF's will be shipping more than 50 a month. As I posted in another thread, you cannot assume past fulfillment performance is an indicator of all future fulfillment performance. Production has ramped up and we will be shipping hundreds of EVFs per month.

BC

Any indication on my full paid EVF delivery ? I am a RED 768.

You guys are going to POP! when you get your first RED.
and the second POP! is going to be when you get your EVF!

it's like looking through glass!, no pixels, no cheap screen, awesome colors and range! seriously cool.
The only eye piece better to look though is the Panovision Millennium and that is glass!

I'd DIE if mine broke down, got lost or stolen. Id fall into major depression!
It's what finishes the perfect camera.
All I say guys is this. Order 2 evf's per camera!.

It's Like chocolate sauce on top of ice cream....
Like a shot of vodka in Jessica Alba's belly button.......oooops....stopping now.

Just wondering if every Red that has been delivered or ordered has requested the EVF?

I definitely have a lot of reservations about doing business with RED. Obviously I love the technology going into their products, I like that they give some indication of what they are working on. What I don't like is selling unfinished products. I don't like that Jim comes on here and teases about upgrades and updates that never do quite what he claims only to hide behind the "subject to change" disclaimer. Whatever happened to honesty? Either Jim has the most inept engineers working for him who are constantly telling him stuff about the cam that won't ever come to fruition, or he himself is at best stretching the truth about where the camera is headed. Every update to the cam is "the big one" and it turns out the biggest features always get pushed to the next update.

When it comes to the delivery schedule, simply put, you guys have consistently dropped the ball. Let's just compare the difference in the schedule from September 2007

"Serial numbers 1-50 Delivered
Serial numbers 51-100 October 15th (50 units)
Serial numbers 101-200 October 30th (100 units)
Serial numbers 201- 600 November 30th (400 units)
Serial numbers 601- 1100 December 30th (500 units)
Serial numbers 1101- 1600 January 30th (500 units)
Serial numbers 1601- 2200 February 30th (500 units)
Serial numbers 2201- 2700 March 30th (500 units)
Serial numbers 2701- 3400 April 30th (700 units)
Serial numbers 3401- 4100 May 30th (700 units)"

-Jim

vs. April 2008

501-1000 begin shipping in February
1001-1500 begin shipping in March
1501-1750 begin shipping in April
1751-2000 begin shipping mid May (2 week delay)
2001-2500 begin shipping late May
2501-3000 begin shipping mid June
3001-3500 begin shipping in July
3501-4000 begin shipping in August
4001-4500 begin shipping in September
4501-5000 begin shipping in October

Why should anybody believe their camera is going to ship anywhere near on time based on this? There is a lot of arrogance at RED that starts all the way at the top. "Under-promise, Over-deliver" sounds great but the truth of the matter is you guys have been over-promising and under-delivering far more than the reverse. Read this quote from Jim in March 2007

"1. Getting our camera fully feature enabled at the time of release. That means that the 1st customers will have to bear with us and do software and firmware upgrades for a couple of months. Record RGB is one of these types of features." - Jim

A "couple of months" you say? We are now 7-8 months since the first 25 were delivered, with building 16 supposedly being THE big update, and that seems to have slipped further from where Jim originally indicated it would hit. Realistically we could be looking at 9 months from release to get a "finalized" camera when Jim promised "a couple of months." I will patiently await development at RED before I put in my own personal order, but my company has already canceled it's order and will likely go the rental route for the feature we are doing later this year. Make me believe RED, make me believe.

I have had a Camera for almost 2 months. I have NO Bottom Plate and NO dove tail. I have a hard time attaching anything to my camera with only one top mount. (I ordered another one 2 weeks ago and still have nothing). C'mon RED how are you worried about getting out 1000 cameras past mine (#759) When people that were way earlier in line (the very purpose of your post Jarred) are being stranded. What am i supposed to do without the basic operating requirements of my camera? Please give a loyal customer something to expect in the mail soon for waiting nearly 2 months. Am I the only one?

I have one I can send you dude.. You can send it back when you get yours with a small gift certificate or something.

:)

sb...

You are rightish sorta, but still quite wrong...

YUP, the cam is still in development, and I hope it will be as long as I have it. Nope, it's not out of beta, and your deliverye-stimates... only shows me that I've been following the development longer than you have :)

We've been a small gang of cheerleaders from the very beginning who was conciously in for the joyride, and I must say that I never have felt cheated. Rather on the contrary... But the customerbase has and will change (think Scarlet...)

And not everyone who sees the beautifull images are prepared for a company quite appart from anything else I've dealt with. But RED is far from the first company I've dealt with which has been delayed, so that factor is more of an annoyance than anything else.

Where you go wrong is that the "in development" part should be divided from "useability and able to make stunning imagery" part.

The predicted features have changed. Mostly for the better, some definitely not. But those are few. And much fewer than those that have improved.

The workflows are here. One just have to conciously choose which one are going for.

The guys working with the development seems like they're in a total testoserone/adrenaline rush @ first sight, but the bigger picture is unfolding.

Where RED will have a challenge, is that they'll eventually have a "normal" customerbase which outnumbers us geeks and crazy and easily fooled ones who put down our deposites KNOWINGLY before there was even a proof of a working sensor. I cannot number the times people told me that I'd been scammed, tricked or fooled and I've had to respond that, well even if that should be the case, the idea is so good and I'll be having so much fun for those 1000$ that I don't know where one can have more fun for that price - as a camera geek, that is. YUP. I had a rationale behind ordering, too - but that was mostly trust in the guys Jim hired. Oakley? Billions? I didn't know they sold so many brand sun-glasses. Meant nothing to me from the beginning. Jim being liquid had some impact, though... :)

And even though I took delivery almost a year (or was it more than a year, I cannot remember) after my 1st predicted delivery (I got my cam in late march this year...) I've never been fooled. Not even when the cam all of a sudden came without lens, battery and an LCD which was initially predicted.

There have been smoke and mirrors @ tilmes for sure, and I can understand it. They run a business after all, and to some extent that is smoke and mirrors. And I have been irritated, for sure! And the biggest scoop of all times must have been that flight to NZ... Boris and Natasha was not named "alpha" @ that time. And I don't mind. :)

When the delays have been too much "not to notice" they have picked it up, which in general terms means that Jim has picked up the bill personally to keep us happy. OK. His pockets are deeper than mine, but I never asked for it, and he never promised it. And still he did it. Time after time...

And the result of this, my "being fooled and tricked and lied to ordeal" over more than two years, you know what that is?

The best HD camera I could ever put my hands on! With the most efficient codec and workflow which is currently available IMHO.

WOW... I didn't say 4k.... Buuuuuhhhh

Well, I don't have too much 4k equipment laying around, so I don't care, but I see what that extra data does to my HD, for sure.

Since I got the cam in and after the very initial tests, I've had new gigs coming in for it.... every day.

It's me with the cam here, but still.

My guess is that there are a couple of more buyers like me out there from the initial batch, who think your kind of posts are almost personally offending, even though I really can see the logic behind it, it doesn't resonate very well with me. BUT this will be the biggest challenge for RED the next couple of years....

The "early adopters" "morons" "chearleaders" and "easily fooled" now have an imperfect cam that can take close to the best video/digital cinema images in existense, and of course the rest of the world wants that, too without buying into or accepting the rollercoaster.

But as long as RED is still officially in beta (and they are untill build 16 is release and the SDK is released), there's nothing a concious man should NOT take with a "lump of salt" when it comes to predicted timetables or features. What some seems to forget is that ONE is actually working quite exceptionally well in its current state...

This will eventually have to change, and I guess I will miss these early days, but for anyone buying into it today, it is still very much "in beta" "changing" and "unpredictable".

That's the nature of the beast. Noone should buy into a product like this without understanding that. I sure am happy I did.

And Jim, if you're listening:

Come on boy,
have a cigar (etc...)

I definitely have a lot of reservations about doing business with RED...

everyone has been completely upfront that these schedules don't mean shit. They are purely estimates, practically pulled from the ass, and customers are NOT supposed to make any productions plans based upon them in case they change, as they did.

Also you forget to mention that the camera IS fully functioning now when compared with the original spec (with the exception of RGB which was openly tossed aside a long time ago) every update now is purely bonus goodies.

I mean, originally we were offered 120 fps 720p, and everyone freaked with delight. Then Jim gave us 96fps 2k, out of left field. THEN we 2k 120 fps. Sweet :) And other cool things like RC36 have emerged.

True there have been bumps, and if you don't feel comfortable giving them your money then of course don't. But as rule I think most would say they've exceeded expectations, but failed to meet them.

Depending on how you define it, we're still missing some key stuff. But Build 15 is much closer to what we were expecting in Build 1, with some notable exceptions that blew me away (3k, 120fps, etc)

i would totally trust you to know this better than I. What was originally promised that hasn't been delivered as far as camera functionality?

I'm not sure how one can follow a camera for longer than the original announcement Jim and Co made in 2006...

You dont have to buy one...it is a free country.

What, are you 12 years old? Obviously I don't have to buy one and my whole post was about the fact that until RED fixes these issues I WON'T buy one. But the arrogance of RED coupled with it's devoted minions that always denounce any negative opinion of anything RED is getting quite old. RED needs to finish their first camera and make it worth the investment (And it's cost vs. <insert cam> is irrelevant until One is a completely stable product) that many of us were willing to make based on what Jim and Co were telling us.

"but the arrogance of RED"

hummm !
"Whatever happened to honesty?"
" Either Jim has the most inept engineers"
"or he himself is at best stretching truth"
"only to hide behind the "subject to change" disclaimer"

based on the above i think it is good you cancelled ... not sure what part of "subejct to change ... count on it " you don't understand ?? ...
you want a finished camera ..
come back later this year or early 2009 and it will be a finished camera or look at other Red type camera's in the market place that are finished...
in the meantime i'm sure many here will be glad to rent you a RED ...

close, im 14...but seriously its an $18,000 camera. What else can you get for $18k that is even close to the Red?

The camera works now, and is worth far more than $18k. I have been using mine for 6 months, w/o any serious issues...actually in 6 months it has paid for itself. For $18k you cant even buy a Pro35 adapter.
You seem to be the arrogant one here, why dont you just move on.

no wonder jim took a break from all this. why is it when certain features aren't met, people cry like the camera is all the sudden useless?

it's a 4K camera that you can outfit and use for under $30,000. are you naysayers and crybabies f-ing kidding me?

When this post came (Dec 2005) the buzz was already quite loud... I don't remember when I was first directed to the original RED.com website. It said est 1997 (I think...), so I guess someone just waited for technology to mature...

sblfilms, if you have decided not to go for RED, why argue and debate at all? Your post is quite offending - as many posts from other posters without a serial#.

And isn't this you are asking for, just what RED does for the moment: catching up.

And about not fully functioning: a friend of mine, director, has just wrapped the first Swedish feature done on RED, with one of the best DPs in Sweden (not me ;-): The DP and the team are quite overhelmed about REDs quality and performance. So it does work, don't go around with false information please.
