Car battery power for RED One

I have just received my RED (6807) and am powering it with Anton Bauer batteries (main reason they can be transported by air without any problems and I have quite a few of them with charger etc from my 2/3" cameras). I mainly film wildlife (often from a vehicle) and with the 2/3" I used the car cigarette lighter connection into the Anton Bauer charger which had a connection to the camera so the car battery would power the camera. However, the RED power plug is very different to the 2/3" one. Does anyone know of a converter to the RED power plug or otherwise of a way to power the RED from the cigarette lighter via an inverter or similar? Can I buy the RED power plug anywhere? (I am in Australia but of course can order online from anywhere).

I would recommend running thorough an inverter, and then a 12v power supply (Red or other). The 12 volts out of a vehicles DC ports is not very well regulated, if at all. Recording tapeless makes me nervous without clean power. I would also never run a Red power supply off of AC power that is also being used by G&E, as major spikes and lows can come from striking a big light, or bumping a dolly.

I agree with Nick's suggestion of running thorough an inverter, and then a 12v power supply (Red or other). We just finished shooting in remote parts using this method as well as charging RED bricks the same way. Worked fine.

It is, however, better to run the inverter directly from the battery with clips rather than through the vehicle's lighter socket in that the battery charger's draw is likely to exceed the rating of the lighter socket's fuse.

I havent tried it, but will the RED Car adapter power the camera directly through the charger and shunt cable? It charges the Batteries no probs.

I haven't tried it either, but you should be aware that when you use the RED Car adapter to power the charger, you should never start the car with it attached.

Although it has several protection circuits, it has a design flaw in that does not handle input undervoltage, which occurs when you crank the engine and draw a high current from the car battery. This can damage the adapter such that it may overheat to the point of being potentially a hazard. This is why they were all recalled (you should have received an email to send yours back for a refund/credit quite a while back) and are not being sold at the present time.

I've kept mine as I want a car charging option, but I'm aware of the hazard and make sure it's never left attached if someone might start the car while I'm not there!

in my field recording case.
car-cigarette was 40W limit.

RED Charger require 100W. I checked at clamp meter.
probably REDONE are 90W. I don't know.

trouble happens because car-cigarette has heat. at long time.
it's steel so it have resistance. few ohm.

Therefore SPEAKON of neutrik was necessary for a connector.

I got 100V from battery with a direct DC/AC regulator the other day.
The regulator stopped in protection when started the engine.

I wish I kept mine too. I guess I was hoping they would start selling a new and improved version by now....

The RED AC adapter is quite light and compact and inexpensive at $135 and has the RED power connector as its output. If you use it with an inverter (These days a 400 watt inverter, which is more than enough, is about $35) you can hook it to any 12 volt source with some pretty good isolation between the battery/car and anything that could cause a problem for the REDONE.

I received the recall email on the 3rd July, so you may have been missed. Worth contacting your Rep and enquiring if yours was in the recalled batch.

I've wondered about using the RED with a power inverter in a car but was afraid of potential spikes. How clean is this type of set up? Is it a good idea to put a surge protector in the line for extra protection, or is that ineffective/not needed?
