  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Capturing the SDI Out

How does the 720P footage captured from HD-SDI to Kona IO-HD into FCP look? You're capturing as AppleProRes HQ I'm assuming.

As of today May 8, 2008. Build 15, SDI out is for monitoring purposes only, Not recommended for commercial use yet.

There some other wild cards here.

50 vs 59.94

RG59 vs RG6, RG59 is very noisy, especially for long runs.

Yes, its a standard 1280 X 720 progressive signal. You can select 50.00 or 59.94 Hz refresh rate independently from the camera acquisition rate.

RED System/Monitor/Monitor Settings MENUS [DVI] vs VIDEO [720p] Yes this does play a role in your SDI signals. I find this out the hard way.

AJA vs BM, Your capture hardwares matters.

the idea is to use the 1400 deck to record onto dvcpro hd tapes at 720

Until we get more features turned on, I would shoot HVX200 with an adapter just because it's cheaper if your goal is 720p with DOF.

If you are going out to film like us, there is no other choice but RED.

Tek

P. S. I love my RED ONE. My girl friend is actually jealous of me spending too much time with my RED ONE.

Oh yes, film is alive and well in the theaters. Not for acquisition though. LOL

I'm beginning to think it's a Blackmagic Driver issue as regards the inability to capture. Today I tried going camera - HDlink- Dell 24inch and was unable to get a picture at all (on either 50 or 59 settings in camera).
This is the same set up that I use daily on my edit suite going BM decklink- hdlink-dell.

So is it just that BM is not supporting the exact signal spec from the camera?

Great idea Stuart. I am no expert in SDI signal My only conclusion at the moment and it could be completely wrong is that BM is fussier than I thought and that the RED SDI out is not a strong enough signal. This is the first device I have not been able to capture through the BM. Looks like the AJA cards don't need as strong a signal. I am going to have a chat to the guys at BM, they are only around the corner from me.

Cheers, Chris

Did you find a solution? I also got the same problem with a BM Decklink HD Extreme. But not with all Red's wich I use to worked. Some work perfectly , some give a few speckle and some give a lot...
Few day's ago, I worked with the serial #0183. This one is very badly affected.

The only ting all those cameras have in commen is the Video Break Out Box from Element Technica. I never tried the [DVI] or VIDEO [720p] setting proposed by Tekcin.

Are you shooting 50 or 60 fps? The Red is delivering true progressive, no progressive segmented frames. Most video hardware won't accept 25 or 30 fps as true progressive.

Hey Chris,
you already tried reclocking the signal through an AJA HDSDI VDA with no luck? that's bad!
now you use another IO-Box that works? or did you solve this issue with BM?

cheers

Hi Phibes

I ended up buying a Kona 3 card as I ran out of ideas. Never had a problem since and have been running up to 120 meters of cable.

Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris,
yes I think I will buy an Aja too. For your information here's what the guys at Blackmagic finally said:
> Thankyou for your patience on this matter. I have been talking with
> our Global Support Director about it. The problem you are experiencing
> is a known problem, and we are currently in talks with RED about it.
>
> The problem occurred following a RED camera firmware update, however
