So I have some shoots coming up this summer, and want to buy an Epic, but obviously they wont be out in time for non RED owners.

Since I know I want to buy, i feel its a waste of time to rent a whole kit every time I need to shoot. So my theory is, I could just buy the prime kit, CF cards, LCD, RED Rocket, etc, now, and then rent just a RED ONE body for the shoots. Then when the epic is available, just order the body and modules I need. Is that sound logic, or am I missing something critical here?

The logic's not bad, but it's a bit of a gamble if you're banking on using everything with your Epic. The LCD you get now, in particular, won't be a touch-screen, and you'll wish you had one with your Epic. Also there's the standard caveat about everything being subject to change (for one thing, CF cards will get bigger, and other components will be redesigned or upgraded).

So a lot of the gear should work with Epic, but you never know what might come out in the next several months that might work even better with Epic... I guess it depends on how much you'll need to use everything between now and when Epic is available to you and how much it would cost you to rent it all.

There is a lot more to a functional R1 kit than CF cards and an LCD. The only things you should consider buying would be lenses, RR, support-head/sticks/hh bracket, and aks-ff, mb, external monitor.

Ben is right about waiting for things to be finalized. There's actually not a lot of stuff that will transfer over to Epic that is available/not on back order right now. The only things that transfer over are:

Batteries- there are new batteries that might be more appropriate than the current ones
EVF- current version is no longer available and the Bomb EVF is on backorder for a longtime
Harddrive- no reason to rush out and buy this because you wont save that much money by purchasing instead of renting
CF cards- i'd wait until we find out when the 64GB are planned to ship
LCD- The touch screens might be cool to wait for
Cables- really no reason to buy those now

I realize you're excited but do yourself a favor and wait a few months before you make Epic specific purchases, you'll end up saving yourself a few hundred or maybe even a thousand dollars.

Have you checked out the market place on the forum... there are epic-X stage 2 upgrades for sale. Might be another option?

Good glass tends to be a pretty sound investment, Red rocket seems to be also.... but as Ben says... some of the other modules, storage etc could depreciate quickly.

Make sure you can find a RED ONE body only for rent in your area.
In Toronto, it seems there are plenty of complete kits available, but nobody wants to separately rent out just the accessories, or just the body itself.

thanks for all the help everyone, trying to be as patient as possible, its just so hard!
