Hi - I'm a Newbie trying to import some RED test footage into FCP 6.0.6. I downloaded the FCP Installer 3 and the REDCODE Quicktime Codec (Beta). I thought i fully installed both but I don't see either in my Applications and, in FCP Log and Transfer, I don't have any of the Red options showing up under Log and Transfer preferences, so if i select any of the red files i get an "unsupported media" warning and I can't view/import anything.

I hate technology right now, so be gentle.

Thank you all.

Vern

FCP Versions

Hello,
There might be 2 reasons for your trouble:
1. If you are using FCP 6, which is part of FCS2, you might need FCS2 RED installer, not FCS3...
2. Read the RED FCP White paper. All info is there.

I have FCS 7.0.2, and also nothing was working after installing FCS_Support package from red.com. The Red codec installed, and Color appeared to have the RED room, but FCP remained unchanged. Then I installed the previous - FCS installer 2, and it worked. Strange, heh?

Gavin, all of the above is present - FCP 7.0.2 and OS 10.5.8. FCS-Support 30.1 is installed and works great with Apple Color, the Redcode codec is working ( I am able to use all of the RED software, as well as playback QT proxies generated by camera). However The Final Cut seems to be untouched. No support for Red media.

I just realized I confused the installer versions in my previous post. It's the FCS-Supoport V20.0 that works, not the "FCS Installer 2" as I referred to it.

OK, Pasha, try this. In Finder, navigate to

/Library/Application Support/ProApps

on your boot volume and delete the MIO folder. Then run the v. 30.1 installer again. If FCP still doesn't recognize the Red media, verify that the MIO folder exists. If it does, try repairing permissions on the boot volume.

Gavin, thanks a lot for following up. I already do have FCS_Support version 20.0 installed though, and it is working fine. Should I uninstall it first? How do I uninstall it? If I just run installation of 30.1, I won't have any way of knowing whether it installed correctly or whether it's the old 20.0 still making FCP recognize the ReD files. Is there a way to check that?

Right now it's a bit of a Frankenstein. Color has the RED room support with REd Gamma and RED Color, which is the 30.1 feature - so I know it's the 30.1talking, however FCP did not recognize RED files until I ran installation of 20.0 (whih I did after already attempting the installation of the 30.1), so it must be 20.0 working in FCP.

Does this make any sense?

Hi Gavin,
That is a good question re uninstalling Red 30.1 from FCP!

Most software you either delete the application or there's an uninstall method, but how do you uninstall Red from FCP, this caused me a conflict with my Matrox card the other day and the only solution to uninstall and reinstall matrox.

Im waiting for scarlet and trying out some Red files, but all seems problematic at present.

Can any one help.

Andrew

Im running a Mac Pro V 10.6.4 2x2.26 GHz Quad Core with 16GB 1066 MHz ram los of hard drive internal 6TB Ext 10TB on SAS.

The only footage l got which was down loaded from Peter Majtan tests does not run smoothly or goes to green and locks off, is that corrupted files!

The work flow does not seem easy, lm l missing something. I want to shoot on scarlet when its out, so trying out tests at present.

Its not quite ABC as XDCAM is.

At present shoot on EX1R which with alter settings gives really great footage.

Any help welcome, thanks in advance.

OK guys, let me try to address both situations.

The Apple installer doesn't always report problems. The ones we've seen tend to be on Leopard systems. Apple changed the way installations are logged ("receipts") between Leopard and SnowLeopard.

Also, the Mac OS has no uninstaller.

The following is what our package installs. You can manually delete these things in Finder or at the command line, and then run the installer. If everything is present after that, you know you have the right version.

You should update to the 30.1 installer, because the version 20 package does not support the latest color science and camera firmware.

Thanks Gavin!

Thanks Gavin!

Hey Gavin, this is great, thanks!
Just one more question - if one has version 20.0 installed, is it the same paths/files that should be deleted in order to unistall it? Would one need to uninstall version 20.0 before installing 30.1?

I have a feeling that because I had 20.0 installed and then I installed 30.1 on top of it, FCP is still operating with the 20.0 while Color "accepted" the 30.0 (actually, in the RED room it indicated "RED PLUGIN v.4.2", which is a sign of 30.0).

Also, if all fails and I am stuck with 20.0 in FCP, do I need 30.0 in order to properly Log & Transfer 4.5K widescreen footage? I am aware of how Color handles it, thanks to the description in the version history on RED.com, but nothing is said about FCP.

And while I have you on the line, I am also trying to figure out the following.
FCP's L&T, when set to "As Shot", seems to not recognize the FLUT settings if they are changed later using Clipfinder or REdCine-X. Is that normal? Or is it another sign of 20.0 instead of 30.1?

Thanks again!

Hi Pasha. The file locations are all the same for the two versions. So you won't be stuck with the old version; just go into the Library and delete that MIO/RAD directory that's listed above for the L&T plug-in.

As to your FLUT question, that strikes me as normal but I'll double-check it.

Gavin,
So, I installed QT codec beta some time back up to 4.1 & a LONG time ago...I upgraded to FCS3 installer(when if first came out)---i just saw this thread and checked my "MIO" file and mine had a text file within that file that read about version 20. So, i deleted the "MIO" file and reinstalled FCS3 installer and a new MIO file is now there. SO....questions i have are: well....i've actually installed FCS3 installer in the past about 3x and very perplexed WHY the new MIO file NEVER installed. But more importantly, will i now be up to date with the latest QT Codecs? I had installed the beta QT Codecs up to version 4.1 when they were stand alone installs. Am i now up to date with this install of FCS3 or was the QT Codec installed with RCX version 261?

**NOW---how can i manually verify that i am actually up to QT Codec version 4.2 ?** I've had numerous problems with transcodes not appearing as R3D's have appeared and I've ALWAYS been leery that it was the fault of the QT component not being up to date. Can you please assist in this respect.....QT component and verify the procedure was executed properly for deleting the "MOI" file etc....
Thanks

Well, you're in good company. The Mac installer doesn't report failures in many cases; and with no reliable way to reproduce this problem, it has been impossible to troubleshoot. Are you on Leopard or SnowLeopard? We've seen more problems on Leopard so far.

You can, however, manually delete all the files I mentioned above and then run the 30.1 installer. After that, if all the files exist, you have the right versions. Before that, however, if you'd like to help us troubleshoot, I sent you a private message with some questions.

Gavin, i'm using snow leopard: 10.6.4
I've manually deleted the MIO file and re-installed FCS3 and now i have the new UPDATED MIO file. I'm also concerned whether or not the correct QT codec has been installed. That has been a continual battle for me to get transcodes to prores to look similar to R3d files....and i believe related to the QT component.

Sure....will check my pm.
thanks, JOhnny

Gavin, i manually deleted all of the above files, BUT, in your previous post you mentioned DELETING the MIO folder which I DID....i see from this post we should delete the RED.RADPlug within the MIO folder....if i DELETED the MIO folder is that still OK?
Thanks,

Thanks,

Yes, if you delete a folder, all of its contents are deleted too. The best thing, however, is to only delete the RED.RADPlug file, because there may be other plug-ins in a subdirectory under MIO. For example, I have a P2 plug-in on a couple of my systems. Don't worry about it, though; it's unlikely that you had other plug-ins in there.

Got it...can't recall if i had seen something from MATROX in that MIO file....guess I'll soon find out.
