Hey guys,
I was recently brought a problem, that I don't really have an easy solution for.. so I thought I'd bring it here incase I missed something and have to tell the guy he's SOL... He has a 30min project that was shot on RED and generated hundreds of .R3D... An editing assistant then transcoded the files and renamed all of the ProRes 422 file to things like "Day 1- 4A" He then spent months cutting the flick, and now he has picture lock and went back to re conform to the original .R3D to take the 4K version for color correction and sound, he did this using Clipfinder.. and it is unable to match up the files... any ideas of a fix other than renaming everything? Thanks Guys!

If he renamed the files on the harddrives (and not just in the editing system) he is out of luck.

If he renamed the clips only in FCP and the files still has the original name on the harddrive, he can match back (as in manually rename) the clips via 'show in finder' from the sequence - at least he will not have to dig through all the footage...

Is there anyway through the metadata that could help relink.. the quicktimes on the HDD are renamed.

It's theoretically possible that the original filenames are somewhere in the metadata to recover. Check all the various 'Reel Name' and other fields. If not, you're SOL and looking at a manual reconform.

The AE screwed your friend. There is a long ugly road ahead of manual verification and conform.

This is the first thing I tell Assistant Editor's to NEVER do in their entire career of an AE with any workflow EVER.

Are the R3D's renamed? If not you will be able to reconform. Plain and simple. If not, you're out of luck. What grading application is this film going through? Scratch shouldn't have any problems and there are ways you can export your EDL to reflect the source name of the clip. A little more info from you may help to figure this thing out.

The R3D's have not been renamed. They have the original file names from out of the camera. It is the transcoded ProRes files that got renamed by the AE. The film was going to go throught Color... and it was cut in FCP. Can you go into a little more detail about how exactly to export the EDL with the original file names? Thanks so much!

Shot in 4K. Took the R3D's and transcoded out 2K QT's. Renamed those. Imported into FCP. Cut film. Want to go back to R3D's. Followed the white paper on this and everytime I go to the "Batch Capture" step the Log and Transfer closes out and Log and Capture opens up.

Thanks Hans and a question

Thanks Hans and a question

Currently all scenes are in a nested sequence in FCP. Should I un-nest them before making the XML file?

If Hans can't help, then hopefully they slated everything. Then you could make your AE go back and match all the slates up, rename the QT files to the original names, reconnect in FCP, then run the clipfinder workflow from there.

Not a fun answer, but it can be done. I had to do this with a few wierd ProRes files that Redcine decided to randomly change a few characters when exporting them. Only happened to 5 out of about 1000 clips.

Great glad all is OK, Clip finder is a really cool app, thanks Hans for creating it.

Wow... two points for Hans.

nice.
