I was wondering what you guys thought about this lense, whether it would make a good fit for the scarlet 2/3" interchangeable. Also, please recommend what you guys will be using for your setups. I'm looking for a great zoom lense preferably more than an 8x one of the main reasons I want to get the interchangeable version of the scarlet.

Will this lense allow for 3k recording? what kind of quality difference (if any) would I see between this lense and one from red such as the 18-50mm or 18-85mm Pro lenses (which are much more expensive than this lense...)?

Is this lense even made for HD?

Thanks,

Wayne

I just looked at RED's FAQ, it seems this lense will allow for 2k recording only, can you guys recommend a lense to get 3k recording? with similar zoom capacity?

Thoughts on this lense? http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/c...categoryid=150&modelid=9802#ModelTechSpecsAct

My only thoughts are how would you get a smooth zoom with this type of lens, being you have to pull the lense to zoom?

Amazing lens, I own one on a Panasonic 500 but is B4 Mount. I bet you can use it the day red put a B4 mount for Scarlet. I hope not far.

Wayne, are you looking at scarlet FAQ or REDONE?

B4 2/3" lenses only cover 2K on the R1 because the sensor is almost 4 times as big. The scarlet 2/3 is roughly the same size so with the proper adapter/mount B4 2/3" ENG/EFP lenses should work. (There are some optical differences between a single chip and 3 chip setup they may need to be compensated with a simple optic in the adapter/mount)

Now that I think about it, i think I was looking at the Red One FAQ. Is there even a skarlet FAQ yet? lol :mad2:

I can't seem to find out if this lense is made for Cmos sensors or 3CCD's. Is there something I'm missing here? Does anyone know what the major differences between the IRS and KRS are?

I shot with this lens a lot back in my beta/dvcpro days-it's simply an amazing lens for the price. It should cover the 2/3" sensor of the scarlet in 3k-also keep in mind it is a bayonet mount lens and you'll need an adapter to mount on the scarlet, however it is a SDTV lens. I have mounted SDTV ENG lenses on the Panasonic 900, & F-900 and it did look okay, but of course not as good as mounting an HD lens on it-they are pretty sharp lenses. I don't know how this would look if shooting in 3k though. Something I plan on testing if/when the scarlet comes out.
I plan to dust off my 16mm zooms to use with the scarlet. I'd suggest you look around for 16mm/s16mm lenses. They should cover the sensor with no vignetting. They are cinema grade lenses, and relatively cheap since 16mm is close to being dead.

Hello Wayne,
That is a standard definition lens, an industrial grade one as well.
We have Canon SouthEast Corporate Headquarters here in Atlanta, the way they explained to me is that standard definition lenses are engineered for standard def w/PAL (625 lines) to be the maximum.
I have had my $20K 17x HDXS lens on their bench and could see a certain amount corner to corner softness (minor) and color aberrations that were noticeable projected 10feet.
If you are going to get a lens, get an HD lens to start with. The Canon HDGC zooms are the lowest quality I would go. Even with these lenses, the most I would expect to get is 2.1K resolution. Do not forget you will need an Abakus 2/3" to PL mount adapter (Red sells their version as well) putting even more glass in front of the sensor.

This is not correct. That adapter had an enlarging element so they could cover the larger 2K/s16 area. Should not be necessary for 2/3" but even if it is it would be different.
