Hey all,

Wondering if anyone has done a field test with the Canon RF 24-105 2.8/L Zoom and a Red Raptor X... is AF usable? IS working properly? Parfocal without any AF assist?

I lobve the idea of adding zoom servo into handheld operation, but not seeing any confirmation that the lens is fully compatible...

Let me know if you've tried it! :)

Are you already using other Canon RF glass?

I haven't used that specific lens *yet* but consistently switch between RF 15-35, 24-70, and adapted EF 70-200.

My take is they all perform relatively the same - clean image, mostly good AF when shooting in good light, and IS smoothes out handheld jitters. My lenses are not perfectly parfocal - the 24-105 2.8 claims to be, but that might be a Canon body only firmware correction.

Just a guess, but it probably performs like the others.

The 24-105 f/2.8 unfortunately does not cover the full V-Raptor sensor. If you go down to 7K it'll cover, but there's some really pronounced barrel distortion on the wide end, that becomes pretty pincushiony as you zoom in. The lens relies heavily on digital corrections, and as far as I can tell there's no way to apply those automatically with REDs. Great lens on the C400/C80, not so great on the V-Raptor.

Awesome, thanks for that, Daniel!

Works great on my original RAPTOR. Autofocus with the latest firmware is surprisingly excellent, and works parafocally.

I admittedly wasn’t sure when I purchased as I figured Canon was likely doing some electronic para focal magic, if they are it works perfectly).

I have the power zoom motor and it works fine too.

Hi guys, if possible I would like to clarify a bit, I'm evaluating the purchase of the lens but therefore it covers the sensor at 8k at 24 mm. without vignetting? and the distortion is acceptable or horrible, I'm a bit confused by different posts, can someone help me understand better without making a wrong purchase by throwing away money! thank you very much in advance

No there is definitely vignette at 24mm. If memory serves need to get to 28-30ish to clear it.

I own several Canon RF lenses including the 24-105 and all my lenses work great on the V-Raptor and KX. The 24-105 is not a Vista Vision lens of course and as others mentioned there are a few things you'll want to be aware of with stills lenses. I will say, autofocus has come a long way on these cameras and all my RF glass works better than I ever expected. Yesterday for fun I pulled our the Komodo OG and I was making a test with the 24-105 while my son was playing Gorilla Tag (lots of hyper movement happening) on his Meta Quest VR and even the OG kept up far better than years past. I was not expecting such consistent AF performance. I'm using firmware 2.0.8 on the V-Raptor and KX, also upgraded to 1.8.3 (latest GA) on the OG then tried 1.8.5 beta. Super impressed how much progress Red has made with AF after all this time. I feel that despite the Nikon acquisition they really followed through on development by continuing to improve RF AF performance even though it may not immediately seem like it's in Nikon's best interest.
