  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon Patents an APS-C 11mm f/2

That would be awesome for us underwater shooters. I always thought they could do a similar design/size of the 154mm full frame to get about a 9mm for aps-c. Looks like they decided to get an extra stop instead of the extra 2-3 mm focal length. That's a good trade off - the 14mm 2.8 works well underwater on RED/APS-C but you would really like a little wider - this is about perfect.

Why make this for APS-C, and leave the full-frame, L crowd out? This sounds odd to me.

I've been waiting for something like that a long time... I love my Tokina 11-16, but almost never move from 11. Getting a stop, and probably a smaller lens would be great. Although most Canon lens's build quality doesn't compare to the Tokina...

Because 11mm on full frame would be very, very difficult to make. This would bring the primes options for APS-C out almost as wide as for full-frame, where you can go to a 14mm.

No, I mean that they would make a 17mm f/2 for FF35.

I have been saying for a couple of years now on this forum that the one lens that is really, really missing from the market is a 16mm f/1.4 FF. When Epic FF35 drops, this is the one lens everyone will be after.

Totally agree.

While that would be great it should be considered wishful thinking at this time.
Simple calculation results in a front element diameter about 8 inches. As a perspective a 6mm fisheye Nikkor has a front element diameter of about 10 inches and costs about $15K just for the front element....

Hmm. Well right now I would happily settle for a Canon 18mm f1.4 that covers Epic 5K.

I honestly think companies like Canon and Nikon are underestimating what people would be willing to pay for a 16mm f/1.4 full-frame lens. I've heard people say, "Oh, it will be too expensive." Wanna bet?

Tom,

a 16mm f/1.4 FF is no way just because of impossibility to break laws of physics and optics...

In a case that could be possible for given a normal size of the lens keep in mind that you would get it many many years ago...

Recently Leica did 21mm f/1.4 FF35 but it's just for Leica M system that has flange @ about 28mm.

Canon EOS flange is 44mm...

But look at RED and what they did.

Many years ago i showed here a small size of the cam body (SI-2K-Mini) when I was preparing for my IMS project for RED1 (that later failed to get approved by RED).

In between RED went to make its own lenses but they did it in a size of Cooke S4 or Zeiss Master Primes...

Simultaneously Leica finally did set of cine lenses but they did it smart thanks to its own Summilux M double aspherical design (implemented in Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95) very fast, small and lightweight lenses...

What we get today is that hardly Epic can be used handheld with RED Pro Primes just because of RPPs huge size.

But also to mention that RED missed the point with not making EPIC flange shorter in the body design just to allow use of incredible Leica M set lenses for even for still photo shooting in handheld...

RED often said here that they didn't know what they were doing and this case with impossibility of use lightweight Leica M lenses on a lightweight Epic 5K camera is a real example...

Also RED should sometimes listen to RED users and not often what some engineers were proposing...

But it looks so cool! http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/ai628.jpg
