  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

canon lenses--ready to order

I'd like to see Canon produce full-frame lenses, dropping EF-s entirely. I want to be able to buy a lens and then be able to use it on either the Red or a full frame SLR. In that regard, buying an EF-s lens is like buying a crippled EF lens.

If you want a fast wide prime for your RED (like a rectilinear 10mm, f/1.something), it will never be able to fully cover the full frame SLR. Just not a reality of optical design.

Cropped format allows wider, faster, more compact, and more affordable lenses to be produced. I would much rather see a couple of "L" EF-S lenses produced at the wider end of things. Far more useful. IMHO.

Exactly.

EF-s L lenses for us--exploiting the advantages that design would give us for fast wide angle RED shooting.

As already mentioned--Tokina's already got an 11-16 2.8 zoom that supposed to be quite sharp wide open.

Come on Canon, you can beat those guys!

cheering over now; back to work.

Seconded. An EF-S 15mm f/1.4 on the RED ONE would provide a FOV equivalent to the 24mm f/1.4 L on FF 35mm. Unfortunately, if you shrink the 24mm f/1.4 L design down to 15mm, the required back focus becomes much shorter than the 44mm required by the flange focal distance (FFD) to clear the shutter assembly (and be compatible with EF). RED doesn't have a shutter, of course, so someone could build a new short-FFD mount and short back-focus wide angle primes, but I'm not holding my breath.

In the mean time all we have are the much more costly longe-flange designs, like the PL Master Primes: 14mm, 16mm, and 18mm f/1.2 (T/1.3). A three-day rental costs more than buying the Canon lens outright. Maybe someone will make a long-flange EF-S, even if it does cost a bit more.

Using the 24L on an APS-C or RED makes the FOV similar to 38mm, but it performs much worse than a 35mm would. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 has less chromatic abbertation than the 35L, I wonder if it will be compatible and how well its focus ring works.

Full frame coverage is not necessarily important? What if, at some point you want to shoot 4k.

EF-S and other APS-C lenses do cover the full frame of the RED ONE sensor (~25x14mm). They do not cover full frame 35mm SLR (36x24mm).
