Okay. . . this is a lens for the ages. Think the value of the Tokina 11-16 in a long macro.

Yes, camera lovers, I am talking about the utterly amazing, indeed, breathtaking, Canon 100mm Macro USM EF lens.

I was prepared to be impressed with this puppy just based upon Ken Rockwell's extraordinary review, but fifteen seconds after I popped it on my Birger, I knew I was looking at something utterly special.

Here's the deal. . . I shoot a lot of inserts. I just love 'em. Well, this lens is the insert king. It literally is as sharp as a razor, even wide open. And it allows you to get down to the pores level of a subject's skin. Or right on top of an insect, or the hairs of a leaf. I am simply spell-bound with this lens. And the bokeh is amazingly good! I was really surprised by that aspect. It just fades into a wonderful glob of marvelous color. . . until, that is. . . you set it free. That's when you know you've been bitten.

I'm not kidding you. You won't believe your eyes. . . and for a measly $500, it's got to be one of the great bargains of the decade!

Buy it. You will NOT regret this purchase.

Well, with an intro like that, now you have to post some shots!

Honestly, guys, no shots I could post on here are going to do this thing justice. You just have to see it in person for yourself. Just buy it. If you don't like it, I'll pay for your return shipping. It's that's incredible. I can't wait to do some more shots with this thing this weekend!

Just read Rockwell's review. . . that really says it all. He isn't kidding when he says this:

"Good News:

1.) Spectacular optics!

2.) Super sharp.

3.) No distortion.

4.) Super-fast focusing.

5.) Goes to 1:1 in one twist.

6.) I'll say it again: spectacular optics!

Bad News:

None. This is a great lens!

I love this lens. It does everything well and has no weak points.

It's hard to convey this in writing. This is one of those lenses that works so well, efficiently and effortlessly you wonder why all lenses can't be this good."

It really is that good.

Stephen

For that price it sounds good. I just picked up the 100mm f2 Zeiss ZF and it's an awesome lens but it did cost $2k with the cine mod from Duclos Lenses. I would like to see some grabs of this Canon lens in action.

That's the one, Roberto. . .and it works perfectly with the Birger. That's why I bought it. It's just a killer lens!

Optics similar to the excellent 85mm 1.8EF but with macro and 15mm more on the barrel.
Good long portrait lens for FF cameras but pretty long for crop cameras/red.
A sort-of short tele. Short focus/macro is awesome. Good in large rooms/outdoor or pointing at bugs and flowers!

Stephen:

I have one of these and it works fine on my Canon SLRs and seems to be fine on the RED but haven't shot much RED footage.

It seems the perfect lens for us underwater guys (the 60 is not bad but a little short for shooting through ports, and the 180 macro is a bit long - more of a specialty) but for some reason Erik always sort of pooh poohs it for its mechanics (or something) working with the mount. I haven't noticed any problems - what do you think? i.e. is is smooth focus/iris - any idea what he is talking about.

Erik, if you are listening - can you comment on what you don't like about it.

I have this lens and I love it as well, but it does not work well with my Birger/Impero. Manual focus and iris control are fine, but it does not focus well with the impero - very jumpy. I discussed this with Eric and he said this lens was known to have issues by virtue of its design. Stephen, are you having no such issues when focusing with the Impero?

Well that is a shame... then again what would you expect for $500... it sounds like it can still fill in a nice spot in your arsenal with such Macro capabilities. How does the non macro 100mm F/2 work with the Brieger-Impero? I think it might be a discontinued lens though... I ask cause 100mm is a good length to have available.

A few days ago I ordered the Canon 70-200 2.8, 24-70 2.8 and the 100 macro. Starting next thursday I get six weeks off to check them out on my Canon 5D Mark 2. Also picked up a toy that allows me to use my nikon lenses. I wanted to see how my Nikon 500 F4 looks.

After six weeks I can post some shots.

Greg

I have zero issues at all with the focus with the Impero. . . mine works perfectly. . . utterly smooth. I just love this lens. . . and I did some really deep pulls with it. . .

Stephen

Yeah. . . that's very possible. Mine is one week old.

Stephen

OK... well then that sounds very promising. An 8 year old lens might also have completely different motors on it. They very likely have made inmense advancements in the focusing motor department since then.

I would love to see some grabs myself, please. It sucks otherwise to keep hearing about a lens without seeing what it can do. :)
