Hi
First post here. I've been trying to find an answer but is it possible to get an FD mount for the red one? I read somewhere it was but that was on a post long ago. Can they still be obtained? Does anyone have one to sell?

many thanks

Hi David,

Welcome to Red User! There used to be a third party FD mount, but Red deemed it warranty voiding, which also voids the upgrade path to Epic.

Disappointing as I bought the mount and a full set of beautiful FD lenses before my Red arrived. Luckily they announced the voided warranty before my camera arrived so I sold it and got Nikon and Zeiss lenses instead.

Check out the Birger mount, which does not void the warranty. It's for EF lenses but you may be able to make it work for FD.

Best of luck!

thats such a shame. I've got a full set of wonderful FD glass and used it on my first film with a DOF adaptor. I've been using that glass since early 90's. I know the glass so well, my last film won best short 2009 at the LIFF.

I have a full set in EF too but I love the FDs, they're not as pin sharp and IMO warmer than EF. I love the look of them.

I own a 5d but would love to see my FD glass on a red.
I don't get why nikon is supported and not red, there are so many DOF adaptor people with FD who I'm sure would love to move up to RED.

with that in mind, I'm guessing my next film will be on the 5d or whatever version of it is out at the time of production.
Many thanks for the link.

I always wondered if one could use a birger EOS mount, and Canon FD or Minolta MD to EOS adapters with it, then fudge with the REDs backfocus to account for the few millimeters of difference in the focal flange distance between EOS and FD/MD specs so that you can focus to infinity. It's just a theory and might be fun to try, never would want to use an ebay adapter for professional use, but I am curious if this is possible on RED and on the future interchangeable mount Scarlets.

There are relatively inexpensive c-mount adapters available for FD lenses. This might be one possibility with Scarlet.

You'll get fully functional Canon FD mount with IMS for RED but then you'll get a risk to void your RED1 warranty (you would say by-by to RED1-Epic upgrade program,...).

It's a pity because IMS is still the best universal non-electronic mount for RED1.

Also I have some gorgeous, super fast FD glass (f1/2 primes and a couple of zooms) and also some amazing Angenieux zooms with FD mount.
