  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon FD mount NO LONGER being made by RED

i suggest some explanation to how adjust FFD for this mount iwht camera body ...9small instructions) with mount purchase.. thanks Kevin:sorcerer:

We will provide instructions for adjusting the mount, it's fairly easy once you understand the concepts. For those a bit more technical, we will also provide instructions for a math based approach, though I suspect that most will use the simpler, irritative one. It's a job that can be completed in well under 5 minutes with a bit of experience.

Here is another image of the mount. This view shows the rear. The optical seal and the FFD adjustments can be seen from this view.

lookin good, what kind of surface do the FFD adjusters hit? is it something that will wear over time?

khmuse,

So to adjust the flange focale depth you loosen or tighten those four individual screws? If so how do you know that you are maintaining parallelism of the lens seat to the film plane?

Thanks for the question guys:

lookin good, what kind of surface do the FFD adjusters hit? is it something that will wear over time?

The 4 adjusters have a stainless steel flat that is free to rotate in the their bore. They contact a point on the front surface of the camera body. There is no rotational forces, just compression ones, so no wear occurs.

khmuse,

So to adjust the flange focale depth you loosen or tighten those four individual screws? If so how do you know that you are maintaining parallelism of the lens seat to the film plane?

The four adjusters provide only one of the two directions of force, the other direction is provided by the eight perimeter screws. These four other points don't set the FFD, but provide the locking force that works against the force of the 8 mounting fasteners. These all work against the double optical seal which provides the compliance.

The starting point is with the mount parallel to the camera body and in the middle of the adjustment range (+/- .015" or +/- .4mm). This distance and parallel relationship is established with the tools provided with the mount. If all is well (all the tolerances are at their mean) then you are basically done and the final step is to lock all the fasteners. If, after checking the results, you find that you need to make an adjustment, then you follow the instructions to make the required compensation. If necessary you can compensate for any of the possible sources of error, including small parallel ones.

The process takes about 5 minutes once you have performed the steps a few times to become familiar with how it works. Once we get the manual written, the illustrations will be much clearer than my text description of the process.

Great questions!

Kevin

As i heard from Kevin that :w00t:
The FD mount has an internal lever that allows all FD lenses to be stopped down. this mount actuates the lens stop down feature properly
is this clear with pictures you post.. ??

The lever assembly is not show in the images that I have posted so far.

Canon FD mount for RED One -- FINAL deadline is Dec. 10th

ATTENTION: Canon FD lens mounts for your RED One must be confirmed and paid for by December 10. There will only be this one manufacturing run and NO extra mounts will be available later for anyone dragging their feet so it's time to make up your mind.

RED has stated that they may be making these mounts later........ or they may decide to not make them at all. Kevin Halverson (Kmuse) has been kind enough to have these made for us Canon FD folks (with RED approval) so please confirm your order ASAP. Only $440.00 each plus shipping. Contact Kmuse via PM and make sure he has your order -- IF you have not received an invoice or already paid.

By the way -- Kevin is also planning on perhaps making Leica and Nikon mounts similar in design to the Canon FD if there is enough interest (he needs 20+ mounts each) -- again with RED approval. More info & designs to come shortly & will be posted on the forum. If you are interested in the Leica &/or Nikon mount be sure to PM Kevin ( kmuse ) so you are on the list for those -- similar situation with a one time manufacturing run.

This post is to be sure everyone gets a Canon FD mount NOW if they want one. I was the first to bring this FD mount stuff up when RED put off making them, yet I was busy and almost missed the deadline myself so this is your notice for Canon FD mount purchase by Dec. 10 for January delivery.

hi FOR ME I AM ready befor 10 of Dec.. but ihave one question
is it will be update for this mount with the new PL mount of RED ?
will it not conflict or not fit with New body of red .
Guy's i would like thank you for your efforts gathering us here and following up with us , i am not in a rush for collecting this mount but i want you to take your time checking this FD mount with the new body ..
I AM wondering if the new mount could be easily changed to CANON FD mount,,,,
QUESTION :
is there is too much to do for recalibrating FFD ?
if there is missing info i dont know so please help me updating .thanks:love:

I haven't seen the new PL mount first hand, but have seen the images of it. I am working directly with RED on this and the FD mount system will be applicable to the new body. I can't comment on how long it takes to pull off the new PL mount (I don't anticipate its much longer than the old one). To install the FD mount (assuming that the PL mount is off) is about a 2 minute job. Setting the initial FFD is pretty easy, about an additional minute. If you need to adjust it beyond the initial or mean point, this can take 5 or 10 minutes depending upon how many passes you take (adjust - check - adjust ...).

I don't want anyone to think I am pushing them into a decision. My intention was, in order to keep the costs down, to accomplish this in a single production run. This requires that we know the total number of items to be produced and hence the necessity of a cut off date, otherwise its unfair to those that want it to have to wait for those that are uncertain.

Hope that this clarifies it a bit.

If there are any more questions, please feel free to post them here or send me a PM or email. I will try to get right back with an answer.

That looks GREAT Kevin. Wish I had a camera to put it on....

Me too! I hate having to keep borrowing camera's to do basic testing, but, with any luck, #234 should be coming up fairly soon.

Fingers crossed.

Kevin

i am happy today guy's congrats  so fast Kevin form rendering to a Mass mount .:)
did you try some lenses with different ages (breach lock with silver )and
the L(series )(vivitars ,sigmas,...) i am so excieted to see results .

I have a new lens to test your FD mount with.... 800mm 5.6 L. I have no idea how I'm going to make it work with this monster lens... 2 tripods for sure. Probably like docking the shuttle to the space station.

Thats one seriously long lens! Perhaps a really long balance plate with the ability to support the camera and lens. Otherwise, camera moves would be nearly impossible. Gotta see a photo of this beast!
