  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon FD mount NO LONGER being made by RED

I agree with your thoughts Kevin. I do not plan on using FD zooms (most FD zooms are not that good). I think part of the point of using FD lenses is that they are fast, cheap and available. I have a 35-105mm zoom that I may try, but it is F/3.5 and not really sharp enough for 4K until F/5.6. The 85mm F.1.8 I have is sharp at F2.8 and the F/1.2 is sharp at F/2. That is much better for me that shooting a F5.6.

If I need to use zooms I think I will use the Birger EF EOS mount or hit a bank and get the RED zooms.

Hi :
i am planning to buy canon fd 85mm f 1.2 but it looks expensive comparing to f 1.8 is it necessary to have because you say that its sharp spot on
f 2 ?
do i need f1.2 ?

The 85mm f 1.8 is a nice, inexpensive lens. The f 1.2 is much faster, but as you point out, much more expensive. I have the f 1.8 and its very sharp but it does breath a bit more than I would like. Don't know about the breathing of the f 1.2. Perhaps Enzo can comment on the breathing differences between the two.

I'm just talking about my specific 85mm lenses -- every lens is unique.

I have two 85mm F/1.2 lenses I bought off eBay and one is a little sharper than the other one. My F/1.8 is sharp starting at 2.8, just as sharp as the more expensive F/1.2 at 2.8.

If you plan on shooting F/4 - 5.6 then an F/1.8 lens could be fine for you.

If you can test the lens before buying I would suggest trying the F/1.8 first or both if you can get both to test before making the final purchase.

I think the theory is that the faster lenses are usually "L" lenses, and they should be sharper sooner when stopping down. If you have the money and can find a good F/1.2 then I think you will be happy with it.

However you can probably find an F/1.8 that will do a great job for you and leave you enough money to buy another lens or accessory for your RED. It is a smaller and lighter too.

Good shooting.

is it f 1.2 much better for low light shooting ?Night scene for example ?
Or in all cases i will stop down for breathing point ?

Stopping a lens down will change its sharpness, but I have never seen a case where it would have any effect on the amount of breathing that is exhibited.

For really low light conditions, obviously a f 1.2 is a much better choice than a f 1.8 lens.

Breathing is REALLY bad on the F/1.2. Much less on the F/1.8. If that is an issue then I would go with the F/1.8 for sure.

Breathing is a lens design issue and has nothing to do with what F/ stop is being used.

I think I would get the 85mm F/1.8 unless you plan on shooting a lot of night / low light shots. And if you have any plans to shoot drama the focus breathing will kill you with the F/1.2.

It is really only a 1 stop difference and since the RED can shoot up to 2000 ISO I think you will be fine with the F/1.8 and have $5-600.00 left to spend on something else.

Hey Steve,

Thanks for the info on the characteristics of the 1.2, I am surprised that it exhibits so much more breathing than the 1.8, never would have guessed that to be the case.

Very interesting indeed.

Hi guys: New here. I have been following Red's development for about 6 months now and was totally sold when I read back then that Nikon F and Canon FD mounts would be available.

I checked back in today and saw only Nikin mounts. The FD mount seems to have disappeared. So I spoke a tech rep at Red Cinema that said Red had stopped development on a Canon mount and referred me to Birger Engineering. I called Birger who said they are only making Canon EF mounts, but had heard that Red was going to make them afterall. So there seems to be a lot of confusion and misinformation out there.

These past 4 months I've gone out and purchased almost every Canon FD lens ever made, old breech locks, new bayonet, zooms, fixed, fast, slow, aspherical... you name it I bought it. My heart nearly stopped when I got the misinformation today. So did I waste $7,000 by investing in Canon FD lenses in anticipation of using them on the Red One?

It looks like there may be a solution either through Red eventually or through someone on this Forum, but I am not going to put in an order until I get this squared away.

Thanks

P.S. Given my extensive collection, anybody interested in tests on breathing/sharpness? I am currently using the lenses on a Brevis adapter attached to my Canon HV20. I've though about doing some tests, but perhaps someone has already done this.

Hey Tex,

Read through this thread and you will see that red user khmuse = Kevin has already begun work on solution that should make you happy. Kevin is very nice and incredibly knowledgeable, please pm him, he would only be happy to help.

Also, if you have a chance, I would love to see your hv 20 rig, canon glass and maybe if have time a demo qt... Go post it Off Topic... alot guys here have the hv-20 would also be interested.

Cheers and good luck,

Andrew

In an email to me, Jim said that RED would reserve the right to make their own FD mount should they choose to. I of course have no problems with this at all and if, at some point in time, RED does choose to produce their own version, I would be happy to withdraw ours as it was never my intention to become a competitor. Rather, I wanted to relieve a small part of the work load and still ensure that everyone (including myself) that was interested in an FD solution would have access to one.

If someone isn't comfortable with buying something from a vendor other than RED, then they shouldn't feel pressured to do so.

I can report that the first of the parts for our prototype were sent out to manufacturing today. I will be posting images of the actual parts as they come back.

By the way, thanks Andrew for the very kind words!

Best,

Kevin

Just a quick update on the progress of the mount. We are expecting the first articles from manufacturing early next week. I will post some images at that time, however, it really will look nearly identical to the 3d design rendering that I posted earlier.

Hey everyone,

We have exciting news to report, the first lens mounts came out of manufacturing this afternoon! There are a number of things that I didn't want to mention until now, but I am happy to announce the following:

1) The lens mount is under the target price established by RED. As I don't want to use this forum inappropriately, I won't publish the price, but ask anyone interested to contact me.

2) The lens mount has a shim-less adjustable FFD feature.

3) The lens mount can compensate for errors in parallelism of the sensor array to the camera body.

4) The flange of the lens mount is constructed of 17-4 stainless steel is micro polished and fully passivated. The body is constructed of 6061 aluminum and is etched then type II black anodized to eliminate any optical reflections on the inner bore. The exterior surfaces are finished in a black epoxy to complement the body of the camera.

5) All the necessary hardware and tools are included with the mount.

6) Reservations will be accepted through 12-12-2007, deliver will occur before 12-30-2007. Replacement parts (hardware, tools, compliant light seals) will be available to anyone who places an order for a mount.

I will post photographs early tomorrow and will be happy to answer questions for anyone that has them.

Thanks again for everyone's support and patience. I trust that this will satisfy everyone that is interested in an FD glass solution for use with their RED.

Kevin Halverson

Thanks for the vote of confidence Steve.

Here is an image of one of the prototypes (this one doesn't have the anodized / epoxy finish). I will post some others in the morning after I get to the office. This view shows the FFD adjustment receivers and the eight perimeter body mounting points.

Ah, I see the new mounting system has gone to eight (I think) mounting screws on the camera body. A very good thing.

Congrats very nice interresting work ?
it can not bet done ???...with black finishing to suite RED body ?
is changing between it nad the PL mount is easy ? :weight_lift:

Hey Chuck,

It has actually always been eight fasteners, the images that you have seen with four fasteners, was only showing an outer covering, not the actual mount/camera interface.

Here is a partially disassembled image. This doesn't have the optical seals nor the aperture control, but it gives a bit better idea as to what some of the pieces look like.

Hi Kevin,

Seems I'm batting a thousand today. lol So are those four set screws on the mount for setting up the flange focale depth? If they are, that would be a great way to square the lens seat to the film plane.
