Hey thanks to all for your suggestions !

...even though it took 6 lenses to find it).

Enzo, what tests do you do to figure out that the lens is underperforming? I mean how do you know that the performance you are seeing is not the best you'll get? When you buy a lens, do you buy 3 and return 2?

thanks

Yes, I buy 3, test them and keep the best one....or sometimes I have to order 3 more as with the 16-35mm II. There was one other lens in that batch that was OK but 4 were a little soft at 2.8. I shoot tests off the deck at my home of the yard, trees and sky at F/2.8 and F/5.6 with each lens using a 1Ds Mark II camera and then compare them at 100 & 200% on a 24 inch screen - never using any sharpening / unsharp masking in the process.

I buy a lot of stuff from a well known NY store and this has worked great for me. I have read in several stills forums about many people having problems and sending the lenses back to Canon or Nikon to try and get them adjusted -- sometimes works - sometimes not. I prefer to get a good lens and start shooting.

Ansel Adams use to get several of a given lens for testing right from the maker. He didn't even have to go to the store. lol
Polaroid sent him cases of 4x5" film to see if he liked it.
Now that's pull.

It's the equivalent of an actor who has reached "offer only" status. This type of pull is limited to superstars of any industry.
