  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon FD 35-105mm converted to EF

Question for all you lens guys out there... when a lens has fungus, is that terminal or is it something that a lens tech can easily deal with when they are otherwise working on the lens.

Thanks in advance for your wisdom!

Hello Terry,

Depends on how long the fungus has been there. Sometimes it cleans up without any damage. If the conditions were right for the fungus then it would do more damage and start to eat away at the coating of the lens.

Thanks, Steve. Makes sense.

Some more fun with the lens after rain...:

For a $ 50,- USD lens - not a bad performance... ;o)

I just got my hands on a FD 50-300mm f4.5L but haven't been able to try it out yet.. (I'm waiting for an adapter from EdMika)
Does anyone have an opinion about optical and mecanical performance of the 50-300mm? I know it's heavy, but is it a good lens? :)

Mathias, the FD 50-300 is definitely a good lens very sharp lens with no CA. I think you will be happily surprised. It's not the fastest lens out there, but it more than makes up for it with wonderful color & crispness on the telephoto end. It's a great lens when you have enough light.

If anybody is still watching this thread - I just received a super clean and nice looking copy of the FD 35-105 3.5. EOS adapter is on its way. But one thing: The iris does not open or close. Before I bring this to the attention of the seller, is there something I'm missing? I'm new to FD lenses. Could there be a trick lever someplace that only lets the iris move when it's mounted on camera? Or should I be sending this one back?

Thanks for any insight.

Sean

I bought one on ebay as-is and have the same issue. Might be a common problem. Sometimes it will open up and the aperture will work, but about 90% of the time, it's locked at about a 5.6-8.

I'm pretty sure this is an FD mount thing, aperture won't open or close unless it is mounted to an fd mount - you could try it in a cheap micro 4/3 mount for example, once mounted to something it opens and closes as normal.

Canon is not bad but i find Pentax 28-135 f4.0 nicer.

Logan, Daniel, Peter - Thanks for the good news! I'll wait for the adapter to arrive and stop worrying about the iris.
