  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon EOS mounts for Red Pro Primes

Burnt bridges

Burnt bridges

I guess I forgot to mention one, maybe most important issue with permanent PL conversion.
Don't you miss all the wonderful Canon glass on your DSLR?
With the permanent fix you lose access not only to the glass but all the wonderful technology that comes with it- -ultrasonic focus motors- electronic iris, image stabilisation. You see Canon engineers put a lot of work into all these technologies and, aside of the practical applications , I didn't feel compelled to just "hack it away"(sorry for the expression but this is the way I feel about it)
I thought we were supposed to build bridges not burn them....
(bridges between cinema and still imagery in this case)
This was not directed at anyone particular but rather expression of OptiTek's approach to the industry and related technologies
Consider it a Good Friday rant!!!
(what's with me today-second one today on the board?!!!!):blush5:
Matt I'll take the measurements and report back here soon on the lens envelope for the adapter.
BTW any good name ideas for the device?

Thanks David!

Thanks David!

Good one!! Definitely will consider it...
I'm thinking of something about motion, still and bridge device description. Obviously putting all three words into it is out of question. It should be a clever combination- that's why I ask here on the creative's forum...

removable top handle

removable top handle

Can you make the top handle removable...when I don't want it?

Thanks,

The handle is removable right now. Its held down with the silver knob on the picture and its adjustable- you can swing it away and lock it on a rosette...

Hey Jacek-
This stuff really looks great. I know a few pages back you mentioned that Nikon would be difficult due to very tight tolerances, but I would encourage you to continue exploring this option. If you could produce a similar product that also included the best bits of your RED One Nikon Pro-Lock (PL style locking collar, Nikon-G aperture control) and fit it into this form factor, I think you would have a lot of Canon DSLR video shooters jumping at the product. Though I shoot with a Canon body, 90% (or probably more) of the narrative work I shoot with the camera I use manual Nikon primes with crappy $10 mechanical adapters. To have a better situation like one similar to product you're showing, I'd probably be willing (and I think others might be, too) to spend somewhere between $1000 and $2000 on a very well built, modular, non-camera-damaging Nikon locking, aperture controlling connect-to-Canon kinda gizmo! Anyway, if there's someone who's the man for the job, it sure seems like it's you. Let me know your thoughts.
Peace,

-Harry

Nikon

Nikon

In this (camera adapter with handle, support, iris control)form there is a very little chance for a (glassless)Nikon mount.
Nikon to Canon adapters- maybe but I would need some motivation as for sales numbers.
I'm not convinced that it's such a good idea to use nikon still glass on canon cameras. I'm sure you have nikon glass that you love and don't want to invest in redundant Canon glass. That alone is not too convincing to me...
Sorry to sound a bit negative-I just don't see the need to do that...:skep:

That alone is not too convincing to me...

What if I really really really love my Nikons, with a cherry on top??

Just kidding. I understand your reservation completely, and frankly, you're much more of a proper authority in judging the appropriateness and viability of this solution. If it ever does happen, though, be sure to count me as a potential customer.
Peace,

-Harry

Almost ready for the SHOWTIME

Almost ready for the SHOWTIME

Here is an 85mm on unmodified Canon T1i using Optitek PL2EOS adapter with OptitTek Special PL for RPPs.
Now you can quick swap RPPs from standard PL REDONE to 5d,7D, 1D IV for special angle shots, b-cam, scouts etc..

Don't forget!
I'll have Optimator units on hand at the Cartoni booth alone with the new PL2EOS adapter
Nikon ProLock, other goodies...
Exhibiting booth C9918 Central Hall near Italian pavilion, Bad Pro, Tiffen, EVS
CU there

at what focal length do you see it start vignette on a 5d? do the RPP's resolve enough to at least get you to 35 mm and above without distortion?

amazing work, more options more flexibility. any chance you can mod out the compact primes before Zeiss releases their series II's? :p

beat them to the punchline!

I think that you may be OK with 50mm and up. Maybe even 35mm. I think Duclos has a chart with coverage circles for various lenses. Usually that's the case as it's easier to make normal and tele lens to cover more..
IMO 7d is more suited for video anyway. Same lenses, same perspective, etc.
Now with this adapter you can just swap and get almost exact equivalent to S35.
Not the least important notion is that the 5D will always have more jello because the distance that the rolling shutter travels is greater and, therefore, takes more time. The only reasons that 5D is more talked about is the hype for FF sensor and the fact that more were sold and are out in the field as it had almost a year of head start.

A far as compact primes conversion there should not be a problem since the lenses are derived from retrofocal SLR design.
What worries me about it is that these lenses are heavier than their still counterparts and the camera mounts were not designed to deal with the extra weight. I anticipated this in my adapter design and made an integrated support so there is no weight loading the camera mount. I think it's crucial and absolutely necessary. After all some Redusers were initially hesitant to putting RPPs on PL mounted Reds- and PL mount was designed to handle the weight.
What makes the lens guys think that EOS mount can handle the extra weight and all you need to do is slap EOS mount on the lens? I would not want to assume the liability..

Jacek, we are very interested here in South America, how many orders you need to bring down the price target you mention? When are this going to be available? Are you taking orders right now? Wich is the widest that you have tested on 7D? Sorry for been so inquisitive, but its a quite interesting subject. How was the 18mm tests?

I've checked down to 25mm and they all work- with my PL mounts.
The 18mm will need small correction in the back but it will work as well. The side benefit from the 18mm mod is that it will also work on film cameras then.
It doesn't now...
Angenieux Optimos 15-40, 28-76, 17-80, 24-290 all work as is . So does HR 25-250 and Cooke zooms.
I think that's enough to make any budget feature isn't it?
The NAB will proof the validity of this concept- come on by and check it !!!
I'll have all my goodies...:ihih:

Any news on this?
One of the biggest stories last month was that an upcoming episode of the popular TV series House was filmed entirely with the Canon 5D Mark II. I know a lot of you are looking forward to seeing how it turned out, but now you can get a sneak peek: Fox has uploaded a short teaser of the episode to YouTube. It’s not HD, but it’s a pretty neat glimpse into what they were able to do:

It looks...ok on the internet. You can tell it doesn't match the previous visual style of the show...oh well, so it goes, its a feat that these little things did that well. I still side with the highend...it just looks better, RED, genesis, even the sony stuff looks better. Long live the cheap producer...ah sarcasm...and the ellipsis

New line

New line

Any news on this?
This year NAB was a real eye opener for VDSLRs.
I had a great response to the mount but also realized that just a mount is not enough.
So since my return I've been designing and just about finished prototypes of new line of accessories.
Hi res small LCD monitor convertible to EVF, "active" base plate with 12V power and HDMI splitter built in, PROPER shoulder mount based on "cat on shoulder" principal. Electronic lens control for EOS lenses(focus, aperture, but also shutter speed, "punch in" focus assist, etc.)
Another words- madly designing for last two weeks.
Most (proto) parts done- will assemble and post some pictures later on this week:yesnod:

With all due respect - I don't need all of that. I just need a simple, easy to use PL mount for my camera :-) If all of these things end up adding unnecessarily to the price then I'm no longer interested.

Tony,
I just announced options- I can set you up with what you need- I can get you a PL to EOS adapter- with or without support, handle, EVF, base plate, shoulder mount, electronics etc, etc, YOU pick.....
