  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I think this is a pretty decent camera.
Between the C70 and this C400 I think
Canon has been packaging some solid cameras in the below $10k range.

They definitely got audio right with the 4 input audio.

I always liked the look of Canon's cinema cameras footage straight out of the camera better than most of the images that come out of the Red cameras, especially under certain lighting such as sodium vapor and fluorescent.

True Rand.

Canon’s color does tend to look more accurate though I find RED’s DSMC 3 colors more aesthetically pleasing.

Yes REDs can have difficulty in some types of lighting similar to other cameras.
I remember you pointed that out once through an image comparison in a post.

Granted it’s all RAW so there is room for a bit of adjustments but a nice starting point helps.

The way I see it, there are four kinds of cameras when it comes to capturing moving images -

Motion picture film cameras.
Digital cinema cameras
Video cameras
Digital stills cameras with video capabilities.

If you look at any particular camera you can see which of these four categories it fits into, as well as the history or heritage it has when the lines between the categories get blurred.

Looking at it in terms of all of them (even motion picture cameras using film) trying to get to the same point or having the same stated aim, of being able to record images that can be viewed later as an accurate representaton of what was seen at the time of recording, I think it's possible to identify how close each of them has come to achieving that. And it's also possible, when they fall short of or veer away from that stated aim, to identify how their technological heritage or where they've come from plays a part in that.

I'd say there's a distinct connection and similarity between motion picture cameras and digital cinema cameras (namely, RED and ARRI), and I'd also say there's a more distinct connection and similarity between video cameras and digital stills cameras with video capabilities (namely, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Nikon, and others) than between video cameras and cinema cameras (digital or film).

While acknowledging that there are other priorities and goals to consider when it comes to what camera a person would choose to record whatever it is they want to record, (eg. ease of use, affordability, disposablility, access to or willingness to engage in post-processing of the images, other workflow requirements etc.), if all cameras are compared while being held to the same standard mentioned above, one category (digital cinema cameras) gets closer to that stated aim than all the others.

Interestingly, imo, it's the digital stills camera's with video capabilities that have the most potential for improvement and the most chance of reaching and surpassing what the best digital cinema cameras have already achieved. For me, video will always be video, and cinema will always be high quality individual stills frames screened in quick succession, even if they reach a point where their visual end results can end up looking the same sometimes.

So, yeah, that's just me stating why I prefer one kind of camera over another, as a way of saying what I think about that latest Canon camera without having to go into tedious review-like detail.

I still think the RED approach to colour is the most naturally accurate and easiest to adjust or manipulate into a stylized look.

Would still like to download and explore some of the Canon EOS C400 RAW footage though, if anyone finds some.
