  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon EOS 5D Mark II: 21MP and HD movies

Already have a mattebox / followfocus on my D90, and the 5D MKII will get the same treatment

Can you post a pic of this rig please? I'm real curious to figure out a good frankenrig for the 5D.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever seen this done effectively (without the standard resulting missing frame stutter)?

Try Cineform... they may have the best conversion outside of hardware solutions. OTOH, 30FPS isn't a bad frame rate to watch. 15fps is a common web delivery frame rate and it looks good for talking head kinda stuff and that's a simple conversion from 30fps.

I'm not saying a camera like this replaces a RED or anything, but I can easily see a lot of great creations coming from a camera like this. They'll probably just leave what they do at 30FPS. Plus 30FPS reduces 24p judder many don't like.

A couple of major stock footage houses I have talked to recently both said they prefer 30p over 24p. I guess that's because it's mainly TV shows buying stock footage? I'm not sure.

Dammed or not

Dammed or not

Those that have been dismissive of the Canon 5D MII do so at their own peril. Its laughable to suggest Canon "hold back" technology when with Nikon they have brought so much innovation to the marketplace, these two companies survived where Minolta, Contax etc failed because they gave their customers what they wanted. If Red enters this marketplace then the service & quality of finished product needs to rise significantly because pro photographers are a harsh bunch just ask Bronica or Pentax. Equally its not just about a camera but the complete system Canon & Nikon both have over fifty lenses to choose from alone and endless accessories plus numerous third party providers add to this.
If the Canon 5D MKII is what they can acheive at the first attempt then the future for Canon is assured sure it will have its faults but equally you know within 12 months most of these will be addressed. Canon themselves state they are aiming this camera at wedding photographers that also get asked about video they arent aiming it at TV or feature markets so at Euro 2500 / £ 2200 it represents good value for money.

honestly, the "reverie" short by vincent laforet looks like:nerd: It´s not color corrected but anyway, I feel like watching an interlaced video with 35mm optics. it´s somehow strange looking.

There are some more video samples here on dpreview.

Don't see any skew in there. However, it does look horribly sharpened, compressed and certainly not 1080 resolution.

edit: these are samples from a beta camera

Not sure what this is... maybe somebody already posted this? Just one frame in the sequence?

Oops... copyright issues. The weird frame is about 4/5ths the way through the bottom sequence.

Jim

I saw that frame, too (mostly monochrome with some color streaks). There's a similar frame in the first clip. I thought it was an error in downloading, but if other people see it too, then maybe it's a real problem.

So I imagine, if they are pulling and downsampling this video by skipping pixels or whatever, even the feed from the HDMI port is not going to look much better? It doesn't seem like the H.264 software compression is the real problem here.

Yes, there are weird frames in both videos. But it says these are from beta cameras so my guess is that Canon woud fix that before bringing the camera out.

I'm not sure if it is skipping lines to make the read-out faster, it doesn't seem to have the diagonal stepped lines like the D90 video.

It does seem to have some jaggy edges, only finer.

On a positive d90 note, a young man from England figured out a way to slice&reinterpolate the d90 images in After Effects and remove the stair stepping effect!

Well said ! Look at the market they are targeting, and in my view that rig has got terrific value. The test shots in low light are wonderful, the High ISO opens up all sorts of creative possibility's with low to no noise etc etc... Shooting the occasional wedding, and many local bands in clubs etc... As a still shooter having the ability on board, in a light portable rig your there with anyway, to shoot a band clip etc, for their you tube promotions etc... would be a really valuable tool "in the box"... and revenue generator... Specially when you got tapped just to shoot stills... From my working perspective, No, I likley would'nt be trying to shoot a movie on the thing, so argue all you want about the over all look, but compare it to what is out there, for smaller Photo gigs, and web work, real estate shooting occasionally, I could also produce their "virtual tours" with the same camera... again, bands, weddings, etc for web clips... Now combine that whole premise, with Red, and the 16gig compact flash cards, open ended upgrades down the road... and a workin dude down in the trench's would have a real workhorse to shoot with... and film with when ness...

just my 2 cents...
cant wait to see DSMC a true reality ! Youtube clips of live bands in dark clubs.... down the road will never look so good.... Now if I could wirelessly run audio out of their sound board into the camera .... Those clips will sound as good as they look !

Knowing Jim.... The composition of the future will hold a clean slate of creative possibilty

> Canon themselves state they are aiming this camera at wedding photographers that also get asked about video...

That's fine, but having done my time as a wedding videographer... I'm not confident the current collection of Canon still lenses is really well suited to that application. Event shooters need fast, accurate autofocus and smooth control of zoom, not sure if either of those is available in the DSLR video mode (?)

We are all excited about Scarlet! Let's hope it's as terrific as we all would like it to be. In the meantime, we have tools that are available to us, and for many that will be a 5d (I can't afford a Red One yet). If Canon doesn't screw it up too bad by offering a 24P firmware update and uncompressed HDMI output that isn't cropped or cluttered by liveview, then it should be a useful tool for those who can't afford a Red One.

Ciao.

It is funny to look at but that is what we may use for scarlet, plus its already that way for SI-2K MINI. Small form factor cameras with big accessories. Times are changing. lmao also again.:)
