  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon EFS 17-85mm zoom test is online!

Thank Sanjin - I've missed that one... The wide shot looks awesome - everything I have hoped it be... :D

You're welcome Peter.

All that is done as a lens info test for all of us RED Users.

Hi Sanjin,

What's the Follow focus you use? And how does it feel, in a focus puler point of view?

Thanks,
antoine.

Antoine,

I'm still using my old RedRock Micro FF that's acceptable but not the best option.

Looking forward to get Arri FF-4 one day.

yes peter.. it's a great lens.. near by "L" quality too..

yet seriously.. sj.. i thought you'd post your findings on the new canon.. you said something related to..

still waiting.. it should be nice.. you have the patience for this type of exploring stuff yourself.. tom posted something negative.. others said: not so bad.. can you tell us about your own findings?.. it should be really interesting..
No matter what you say. He ignores you. Lol

Do not forget:

you are already "tracked" (identity, location, education, status, movement, etc,...)

by the "professional" and "private" security services in a couple of countries and continents.

:)

Mr. Orange,

you've got fast pretty nervous :) ,

but don't worry here is some additional findings about Canon EFS 17-85mm zoom lens.

So the lens is not a top notch Canon glass (L) and it's discontinued anyway.

One of the biggest flaws of this lens I found is a type of sunset shot with ugly flare as it is shawn at the picture below.

IMS_RED_Canon17-85_sun.jpg

Shot with Canon EFS 17-85mm using IMS for RED, (ND 1.2 + Pola) all Formatt filters.

IMS_RED_Summilux90mm_sun.jpg

The same shot with another lens: Leica - R Summilux 50mm F1.4 also using IMS for RED, (Hoya NDx2 + Hoya UV(0) + Hoya PL-CR + Leica E55 UV/IR) all 55mm screw-in filters.

Which lens are you looking at?

I have the EF-S 17-85mm 4-5.6 IS on my 30D, and I really like it; this one:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=10511

Canon doesn't seem to know about it having been discontinued...

And I haven't had any trouble with it at all.

EDIT: from the description in the first post, it does appear that we are looking at the same lens... only EF-S lens I have, but again, it's been working great for me...

Fde101,

yes we are talking about the same lens Canon F-S 17-85mm 4-5.6 IS USM

but you cannot find it listed at the Canon Europe page and I concluded that is discontinued.

I did not say that the lens is bad and that is not working fine in the case that you know well about the lens issues.

BTW, did you see my Canon F-S 17-85mm 4-5.6 IS USM test footage HERE>>>

sanjin.. now you're on track

Hey Sanjin,

your tests and overall information provided in this Community form you, are nothing short of Fantastic, and I just wish I had more time to respond to as many threads as I like to, but for now been at the new Vegas Studios and with only on other person helping, its tuff.

No one can ever please every body, no one! But again I enjoy your posts, and it blows me away how you always manage also to find all kinds of S%@#$!:)

The 17-85 was one of the lenses I purchased for my little Bro to take to Italy with the new Rebel, my Bro is not like me, He can care less about image quality and Pro stuff, He wants to shoot and go, and don't have to change lenses for every different shot while walking around, and this lens makes a perfect companion for a Body with a 1.6 crop such as the Rebel, now on the RED is a bit different as it kind of looses its sweet spot as far as an all in one kind of lens for Documentary shooting, and yes its quality has much to be desired, but for the price you can't complain to much, and still makes good in off images, and I would not esitate to use it on RED if was the only choice I had, it would still make it to Print. No matter how bad a lens can be, on RED will produce Printable images that will have Movie Gowers scream for more, lets not forget EL MARIACHI Image bad as bad can be ( the original ) yet it maded to th Big Screen, so some time we must wreally step back and stop complaining about image quality so much and kjust be soooo glad that there is RED and tha there is Birger, IMS, and Nikon mounts, that will allow many more users to shoot as other wise will not have had the Budjet to do so.

At last the 17-85 is not as bad when used Manually as yes the AF is just crappy and the USM must be the slowest I have ever experienced in any lens, but again this lens is so fricking light that makes you check again to see if you do really are carryng it:)

Ciao

Hey Ketch,

Thanks for your nice reply and support.

Also I do know that is not possible to please everybody and now the loud part of our community is hopefully calming down a bit.

I must say again that Canon EFS 17-85mm zoom lens is a great, lightweight and actually provides very good performance or excellent bang for the buck...

About a lens flare performance I did not have Formatt's new IR filter to get maybe a cleaner picture at the sunset conditions like with Leica that has its own set of IR filters.

Ketch, anyway it is always nice to have you in a tread.

I like very much your fine Italian/Sardinian approach and style of doing things.

Ciao

My pleasure Sanjin,

will look forward to meet you some time next year, as it seems that will be shooting two scenes of my second film in Vienna, unless I meet you first here in Vegas next April at what seems is going to be an ever crazier RED NAB year:)

ciao

Anything in the UK Ketch that i could help you out with?

Andrew.

Well Andrew,

I hope so!:)

But again this wan't be till next year, and it could be that depending on the final agreements with the Distributing Studios, the scenes in the UK wan't be filmed till the Third film.

Sanjin, let's keep in touch for sure my friend. I think that both Vegas and Vienna provide tremendous platforms, for work and FUN!:)

ciao
