Hi everyone,

Canon's new SLR lens the 8-15mm f/4 L USM could be a good solution on Epic X body's and even better on the Monstro sensor in the near future! Well, too bad that it's not f/2.8....but you still get 12.8 mm on S35 sensors. Not bad, isn't!? Until now don't know better ultra wide angle zoom for Epic X....??
What about you guys?

Happy Merry Christmas, Peter

I think for a ultra wide angle you have few really great cheaper options:
- tokina 11-16mm f2.8 amazing.
- sigma 8-16mm f4-5.6 http://www.dpreview.com/news/1002/10022011sigma8mm16mm.asp (which I would prefer above the canon 8-15 because of its distortion)
- canon or sigma 10-20mm f3.5 pretty well.

Only if you choose to go with barrel distortion I would go with a circularfisheye, and I think I would even go for a 300$ lense in that case (just because I'll use it allmost never). Which does not happen that often for me (even while I do extreme sports and stuff I still see it as a effect). I love rectilinear lenses so that sigma 8-16mm is awsome for me. Don't know what your thoughts are on the distortion side so please share your vision and what you would use it for.

Although I can understand you'd rather spend money on something that 'll be useable on the bigger sensors in the future...

Merry Chrismass to you also, JK

Fisheye is for fisheye so not a solution per se, unless you are planning on shooting only material with fisheye distortion. That said, it looks like a fun lens!

The Tokina 11-16, and more so the Sigma 8-16, seem to be closer to what you are looking for. But neither will be wide enough on a 2/3" sensor if you need this lens to provide "wide" FOVs.

When renting primes for 2/3" a more "complete set" would include something around 6mm, and hopefully coupled with something even wider.

Take a look at the Zeiss DigiPrime focal lengths for example:
http://www.zeiss.com/c125756900453232/Contents-Frame/52c072e134e3e849c125758900480715

Or search for ENG zooms:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/252990-REG/Fujinon_A13X6_3BRM_A13x63BRM_2_3_13x_ENG_EFP.html

So it I would guess the rectilinear Sigma will let you shoot in certain locations, and will probably become very popular. It doesn't look like it will "have you covered" however.

Does anyone know if a wide adapter could be placed on the Sigma?

there are several way to correct for fisheye distortion. might be a lot of fun to play around with. full frame 8 mm down the line is gonna be WICKED wide. can't wait for monstro :)

Thank's for respond's in the middle of Christmas..:-)

- I know about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. It was the lens i consider to have until now. Well, for me it's important to be flexible with zoom on the future S35 Scarlet or "Epic S" for underwater filming that's why ARRI 10mm prime out of my range...
Yes, (Canon 8-15mm f/4) is fisheye on full frame, but for moving images on S35 sensor would make a nice result IMO at 12.8mm. Well, would love to see some example images, but it's pretty new yet. I know Tokina does pretty well On R1, but the Canon is wider 2mm and does make sense underwater.

- I haven't see any test with Sigma 8-16mm f4-5.6 on R1 yet so don't really know. I don't want to judge Sigma, but since i own the Canon 16-35 f/2.8 II L USM have high expectations from the Canon 8-15mm f/4 L USM. Post me a link if you could about footage shoot with R1 and Sigma 8-16mm f/4-5.6 please.

Regards, Peter

Actually you'd get nearer to 10.5mm, since S35 at 5k is closer to APS-H (approx 1.3 crop).

APS-H sensor is 1.6 crop. " I know i have the Canon 7D... :-) " S35 is 1.62 crop. 1.3 crop has the Canon 1D Mark series.

We have been shooting sigma 8-16 for underwater for months - it's pretty much as you would expect -REALLY wide like an Arri 8r.still rectilinear.

The canon is going to be fisheye even zoomed in - just not full circle. If you want that look it is fine - but for surface motion work it is probably always going to look like a special Effect shot, while the rectilinear can look more "normal" if there are not really close objects or odd angles to accentuate the perspective "distortion".

Hi Michael,

Well, if you tested the Sigma and you like the footage then i have no doubt...:-)
As soon as i have my Epic camera will contact you for underwater housing. I know it's too early to ask, but more or less is there any info about the prise of the housing for the Epic and Scarlet?

About the same as RED1 ~$6500 PVC or $8500 Alum - with the addition of about $1000-1200 for the REDMOTE control (maybe in a separate box).

May make a glass dome standard which normally would raise the cost by about $1700 but if I make all of them might get the added cost down to only about a little over half of that.

Hi Peter,

I get it in your case! And offcourse an L series lens is a little bit better build than a third party lens.

Which I could help you out with an example...it would help when the birger mounted r1 came back from the MX update haha. That will still take a couple of weeks at the least.

But maybe this little vimeo seach maybe?

Not that it helps out resolution/shapness wise. But maybe to imagine what the fov and distortion will be like a little bit.

Interesting topic by all means. I always wonder about the wide end when it comes to new cameras.

Was it taken with the Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5.6? Good staff, i haven't notice any distortion... Probably due to the APS-C sensor from the Canon 7D since you are shooting about at 12.8mm at widest.... Make me thinking this lens.:-)
Thank's for sharing the link!
Happy new year if you don't write before!
