Would this lens work well on a 2/3" Scarlet Cinema for long-lens work? Obviously, it's only using a small center piece of the glass. Will a big FF35 lens work out well on a 2/3" chip with 3K resolution? Will it have good resolution? What is the FF35 equivalent crop factor?

Crop factor for Scarlet 2.3" is approx. 3.75.
From DPreview, the 70-200 resolves about 1500 lines on an APS-C size sensor. The resolution on 2/3" would be around 500 lines +/- best case.

that lens would be incredibly supertelephoto on the 2/3rd i believe

Do those lines correspond at all to TV lines.

Might be better to just use a standard def Video lens. Very good ones are cheap now.

Lenses are typically significantly higher resolution in the center, so I would expect it to be plenty sharp.

260-750mm equivalent super-telephoto.

That is some serious reach. A sharp 750mm would be tremendous. I assume that a simple Canon EF mount will be available on 2/3" Scarlet cinema?

You might also try the contax yashica mount zeiss 300 mm F4. A phenomenal lens for motion stuff with manual iris and buttery smooth focus like a Cine lens. You can use a $25 physical adapter on any Canon EOS mount camera - like birger on REDONE or upcoming scarlet

"simple Canon EF mount" is kind of an oxymoron due to the electronic iris, but Birger has said that they will make an EF mount for the Epic/Scarlet system.

Do those lines correspond at all to TV lines.

These are maximum line pairs per image height measured at 50%MTF. This is about 97 line pairs per millimeter(lp/mm). Doesn't directly correspond with TV lines This lens would be very close to the Nyquist limit of 750-800TVL for a typical 1080p 2/3" sensor, but Scarlet should comfortably resolve around 1100-1200 TVL for a high quality debayered 3k frame before it is scaled down to HD. You ideally need a lense that resolves at least 150lp/mm to get the best results with Scarlet 2/3". This is why 16mm lenses are preferred over most 35mm still lenses for 2/3". Very few 35mm still lenses resolve beyond 100 lp/mm, most are in the 50-60 lp/mm range. You don't need as sharp a lens for good resolution on the larger sensor formats.

Wait, David, so you're saying the lens would be soft on a 2/3" 3K system?

I thought the DSMC program had simple field-swappable mount systems, PL, Nikon Canon, etc? I assumed this would work for 2/3" as well?

Ah, Jarred, I was enjoying my Madonna-like name status. I emailed the change of real name to Jason.

Yes, it would be a bit soft on Scarlet, but certainly adequate for 1080P HD output. Not as crisp as a good 16mm cine lens though. Can you use it with reasonably good results? Probably so.
The video output of the 5d for instance based on chart shots I have seen is in the 400-450TVL range, the very lowest end of HD. Still resolution for a 5D would be better than 2000TVL with a really sharp lens, if such a rating existed.

So this gets to the point that using larger format lenses on smaller-format cameras can produce soft results, even if the lens (in this case an EF 70-200 L FF35) would have provided excellent results on its full-format sensor. I remember Pawel talking about this.

I guess I will just have to try it out and see if it's soft or not. What other (affordable) lenses might work for this kind of range 100mm - 700mm FF35 equivalent?

I have got this lens (70-200 2.8 Canon EF L) and several other Full-frame lenses from Canon including the 24-70 2.8 L. Do these work on the Scarlet S35 or will the image circle be too small? Will these photography lenses be an alternative?

Regards
Mathias

Image circle is more than adequate for S35.

I'm looking forward to trying my old Angenieux 12-240 T5.6 16mm lens on Scarlet 2/3".
