I'm looking for a 85 mm lens to rent for a upcoming shoot. I'm shooting a Scarlet in 4KHD with a EF mount. I was thinking of trying the Canon CN-E 85mm T1.3. I'm shooting a series of interviews and the client wanted a very shallow depth of field. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Tony

Tony,
I'd go with at least a couple of lenses but if you absolutely need to go CN-E with only one focal length,
I think that a 50mm could be more versatile in that situation, especially if indoors and @ 4KHD.

We shoot interviews with the L series 85 if the room is big enough although lately we've been using the Otus 55mm and really like it for interviews. We have both if you want to rent.

+1 for Otus, good suggestion. Fantastic lens!

Interviews sound like there is no or not much need to change focus during takes. So you could stay with L series still lenses. The 85/1.2 is optically a great lens and probably "nearly" the same as the Cine-version. I don't like the focus mechanism on this one, but as long as you have static shots this doesn't matter so much. It would be cheaper to rent and deliver the same results as the CN-E. And you can use the rack-focus feature with up to 4 focus points. Could be handy for interviews.

You said you will bring other lenses, so you should really get a 85mm that matches their look and fits best into your kit.

Schneiders Xenon and Xenars are great lenses, the Zeiss 85mm is a good one too. And hey, if you already have other lenses, why not think about going even closer and get a 100mm or 135mm? Again, depends on what you have and in which room you have to work.

I just took delivery of the entire CN-E Set from Duclos today! The one thing I can say in a side-by side comparison with the L lens vs the CN-E is that the L lens seemed to have a bit more contrast (in a non-desireable way. We kept going back and forth between the two and were amazed at how different they looked. I used the 85L all the time up until that... This side by side was the reason that I bought the whole set.

Don't get me wrong, the 85 looks great, but in my tests the CN-E gave a much better overall look and bokeh.

Assuming the CN-E series covers the new VV 20 x 40-ish real estate, offers a decent selection of focal lengths, T2 or better in common focal lengths (super wide or super tele exempted) this set gets more interesting. If they could get a 5 lens set in a nice case shipping at a under $20K price point I think the owner-op market would snap them up.

I just wish Canon's outstanding 30-300MM CN series zoom had a larger image circle. I wonder if a custom converter/relay optic could be matched to the lens with enough precision to be worth the squeeze(sic)? Maybe I should be asking Matthew Duclos that question… or Larry Frank…

I've got you covered there Blair ;-)

Jacek, are you saying that your 1.4X tele-converter for the big Optimo can also be used on the Canon 30-300MM? How big would you estimate the image circle to be after passing through it? Shooting 20x40 format on that lens could be very interesting, especially if all I have to sacrifice is one stop. Just might have to give that combo a test… Is it too soon to start whining for our 8K sensors to ship… ;-)

What we should whine about to Red is truly flexible format array from the largest sensor camera so the lens coverage and sensor resolution can be maximized . They need to make good on their promise of all format camera....
