Looking to stream line and get completely our of DSLR, right now we shoot a Scarlet-W and GH-4 w/ Pix E5h for doc footage at weddings, I am looking to change the gh4 our and hand it to our 3rd crew. I have no experience at all with Canon, zero. What would you all recommend for 4K 24 fps c series to mix well with Scarlet-W? C200B? Also open to other solutions too, just has to be 4K true 24 fps. It should be noted we also mix with an Epic-W from glide cam, not sure if it matters

Hey Steve,

Although most of the C series line footage looks solid out of the camera, I think you may have a problem matching your reds with the lower end C cameras, as they are usually 8 bit, or 10 bit but not with a great codec. So unfortunately they don't hold up that well to the heavier grades that your R3D files will.

However, the C200 has raw, which should make things (hopefully) much easier to push around in the grade. Although I have not gotten my hands on it yet to test. But for you, it would seem to be the only canon camera that makes sense for your use case, unless you want to go up to a higher end canon like a C500.

Do you know what your budget is looking like for this purchase? That'll help narrow down what the other competing options are.

Hey Marcus the 8 bit thing is a killer that is why I like using my PIX-E5H, it looks great, i think I am just gonna have to stay that route as I would probably just pick up another Scarlet-W if I got within that 10K budget and have a perfect match

Sounds like you've got it all figured out lol!

I didn't realize those cameras were 8 bit! Like I said I don't know much about canon but was looking to reduce wires (literally one hdmi micro) just be easier for new assistants and what not, thanks for the info!

I feel you. External recording is an absolute deal breaker for me lol.

I think you are on the right track though. Either a C200 shooting RAW or another Red is your best bet if you are actually going to upgrade. Though you may want to look into some of the offerings from BMD as well?

just get an ursa mini pro instead :)

really? I had such a bad experience with my bmcc, bmpc, terrible battery life, terrible support, terrible file sizes, cameras just turning off ect, have they gotten that much better?

The ursa mini pro is a damn good camera. Ive had nothing but experiences with it. File sizes will definitely be a bit bigger in 4k prores. But you can always shoot RAW on it as well. Low light isnt the best. Thats its only downside

good to know, I wonder if a fs5 wouldn't be a terrible option either, there will be lots of low light which I have found all my current cameras handle well, the pix surprisingly good in 422 hq

Do they have compressed raw now or how can it be less data with blackmagics raw files?

they do. 3:1 and 4:1 options

Just finished a video filmed over many months on way too many different cameras. Primarily c300 mkii, c200 shooting raw, with a sprinkling of epic-w, GH5 and FS7, FS5 (without raw option). The FS5 wasn't much better than the GH5 and extremely noisy. In my opinion from best to worst:

EPIC W>>>> C200 RAW>C300mkii>>FS7>FS5>GH5.
C200 in raw wasn't the worst to match to the red, but workflow was a bear, as the canon raw utility was a bit of a dog.

If I was you then I'd seriously look into the Panasonic EVA1:

As the Canon C200 is totally inappropriate for weddings, the raw of it is overkill for just weddings, and its 8bit codec is too lightweight for your standards. And Canon dumbly gives you nothing in between!!

So thus you should go with the C300mk2, but that is in a totally different price bracket.
