  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon Aluminium for Epic X??? When????

An statement from RED regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated. I know Red said they would never say dates until the products where ready, but it seems in this case they are ready since they are about to start shipping the AL mounts even if in limited quantities.

I would understand that if they found the aluminium mount is not good enough and discontinue it, then perfect. Same as they did with the Red Drive towards the SSDs route. It's always hard because the extra investment but it's good in the long term so I applaud them. But if the aluminium mount is good for the scarlet, it might be good for many scenarios on the Epic as well.

I don't want to sound like a whining person. Don't get me wrong. I am extremely happy with the generosity from RED and the trading in program. It is just the first time I feel really frustrated with a situation that I just can't understand why Epic owners can't add an aluminium mount to the cart. The Ti mount is backorder anyway. And since they are making Al mounts anyway, they could just ship them when they catch up or they finish shipping the Scarlets. But at least it'd be good to know if there is the possibility.

It feels unfair that Scarlet owners can order the Scarlet with Al mount and get then a Ti PL mount right away after they get their Scarlets and Epic owners can't do it. We get our EPICs with a great Ti, PL mount so we can use cinema lenses and then it makes sense to order an Al Canon mount for cheaper rigs.

We are at a point that I saw a post from someone asking prospect Scarlet owners that wanted PL mount to order their Scalets with the AL instead so he/she could buy it from them. I find it ridiculous that we have to end up doing this short of transactions. I don't get it. Please RED say something about this matter.

Let's not create a black market of Al mounts... :-)

I saw Jarred's post where he stated that due to the Scarlet demand there will be no Canon Al mounts available for purchase in the "foreseeable future"
I believe it was in the " November 8 Update" thread but I can't find that thread now....
I'm not too keen about speaking for Jarred here since I don't have the exact quote but since you asked I thought it would be helpful to share....
Here it is- post number 216 in the Nov 8 Backorder update:

Jacek,
It's time for you to make us a canon mount and save us all from this backorder issue... ;-)

If that's the case, it's quite disappointing.

+1 on interest in buying an Al Canon mount for my Epic.

I shoot PL most of the time and due to the size of some of the cine zooms, the number of lens changes, etc I am happy to pay the cost of Ti for PL.

Since most of the Canon glass is smaller and lighter the cheaper Al mount would suit me perfectly.

Here's to hoping the new manufacturing acumen of a maturing RDC means the Al Canon mounts are for sale sooner than later. Go RED, go!

Cheers - #19

Ivan, says it pretty well, I was going to bring it up but didn't want to annoy Jim/Jarred while they are scrambling to get so much done - but I too would really like a lower cost aluminum mount rather than the titanium that I ordered in (August?) and decided to hold off delivery to see if we get this option - I'm approaching the end of my equipment budget for the near future and I would rather invest that money in other items like the cage, a side handle, etc. .

FYI For those that may not be aware, initially when DSMC prices were given the aluminum canon mount was $500, then at some point in the last year Red decided it would only be available in Titanium at $2000 and I think they said there would be no aluminum version. It appears they rethought the aluminum when it came to offering the much lower priced Scarlet. From the different package prices, it appears that Red is working off the same $500 and $2000 prices. (I can't be positive of all of this, but I think I have the basics right.)

There are some real strength and thermal expansion advantages for titanium when it comes to the much larger/heavier cinema lenses that also have precisely calibrated focus distance markings that can change if the mount expands or contracts due to temperature (As well as tougher materials in the Pl mounts themselves which would wear more on aluminum). However, titanium seems to be a bit of overkill for the SLR lenses that are much lighter, have less substantial mounts, and don't even pretend to have precise focus markings - and in fact most focus past infinity to allow for thermal expansion of the lens and mounts.

I don't begrudge Red wanting to get a bit more income from the mounts - we all want them to be able to afford continual updates for new lens profiles, better autofocus, auto iris, etc. Personally, it seemed to me the $500 price was a little low, and the titanium price a bit high. If I'm not mistaken, titanium is about 10 times the price of aluminum, but you are using such a small piece it isn't a big amount in actual dollars, and aluminum machines about 4 times as fast as titanium, but again I think we are talking minutes not hours for these pieces.

Here's an example of machining aluminum, titanium, and inconel that gives an idea:

My suggestion would be to leave the scarlet packages at the same price but put the standalone aluminum Canon mount in the store for $750 to $800 and maybe reduce the ti Canon mount price a bit or leave it at $2000.

I can understand concurrently building/shipping Stage 3 Epic-Xs and Scarlet-Xs even though some stage 3ers may be frustrated but the trade deal is just too good to complain, and Red needs to capture those sales before the competition starts to catch up (Make hay while the sun shines!) but it does seem a little crazy to make people that ordered months ago pay a $1500 premium to get the titanium version that they don't really need while the newbies get the better deal OR as Ivan says to do these silly side deals to get an aluminum mount from a scarlet buyer.

Totally agree. I feel like I waste half my creative energy worrying about backordered items. I guess it will get here when it's ready.

Good News: I have my Bomb EVF, Side Handle, 5" Touchscreen ...

and the elusive Canon Titanium mount.

However, my Scarlet SO# has been passed over because it's aluminum mount is not ready. :001_huh:

This makes HULK angry.

My Stage 3.5 Epic-X must be sent to me without a mount.

It seems extremely odd that the Scarlet-X cannot ship the same way.

Michael, i feel exactly the same way. I just want to shoot now with canon lenses, so if the ti mount takes so insane long to ship, i would have been nice if red would offer people who orderd an option to replace it for the $500 al mount before they ship the al mount with a new product that was released 2 months later (scarlet)...And save me $1500...

+1 on being able to buy Al Canon mount for my EpicX. I can't afford $2k for a Canon mount, unless a feature wants to rent my Epic and needs it. So my only hope for the foreseeable future to be able to use my L series glass is if Red starts selling the $500 Al mount. So please do! Otherwise I guess I can start trying to poach a scarlet owner or something

Well, then. Pretty clear. They are overwhelmed with their manufacturing and can't keep up with the backorder staff so they prefer to give the AL mounts to Scarlet users otherwise the prize of the Scarlets would increase by $1500 (not good for the scarlet market) and they prefer to make the EPIC owners pay the premium.

Disappointing but really exited to get the EPIC-X at the same time. Still waiting on stage 3 though.

We'll pay the premium or find an AL in the black market what can I say.

I just don;t understand why they started making Ti Canon mount instead of AL to begin with. They know how many Red owners had canon mounts through Birger mount, and they knew there will be a high demand for the canon mount. Back when I order my Redone, Red was going to make it's own canon mount. That's one of the main reasons I jump into buying the Redone, as I couldn't afford back then PL mount lenses but then they stop the development and all the drama regarding the canon mount exploded. Drama aside I'm so glad at least Birger, made the Canon mount.

I just hope Red will develope a follow focus for the Canon EPIC. Becuase eventhough in many aspects I'll get a great improvement moving from my Red into the EPIC I am already missing some things from the REdone. I wish I could keep both.. :-)

Any update on when we can buy Al Canon mounts for Epic?

I knew you'd join the Red Bourgeoisie class eventually :-)

I'm just so happy with my Epic now that I have gotten my Canon mount. Hope they do start selling the Al Canon mount soon as it really is a must have. The Ti one is super expensive but for me right now its worth paying that extra bit.

We even ordered both of our Scarlets with Ti mount. Now that I have received the first one with Ti-PL, I must say that it's worth every cent. That beast seems indestructible, and precision of a mount is very important to making the full use of your lenses. Looking forward to the one for Canon glass.

I'd never want to use Al on an Epic, but maybe that's me only.

Oh I hear you. This weekend I was REALLY wishing I'd had the Canon mount and DSMC side handle. My son was born and I couldnt lug a full Epic in there as I have it built now (RPPs, matte box, v mount batteries, etc). but if i'd had a tiny Canon lens, canon mount, DSMC side handle, I would have been able to find my son (not the birth, not into that, but little things like him getting weighed, etc).
