Just received this lens today. Bought used from B&H for $249. Can't mount on my Red because still waiting on Canon mount but shot some test video with it today on my Canon 5D Mark II and several people had asked me to post results in other threads. Here they are. Zoom is smooth. Focus adjustment is loud on this lens though! Will try to add HD clips soon. No retouching, no processing on these stills, just screen grabs from the .mov files right off the CF card.

Anyone know where I can rent a Canon mount for a week so I can try out this lens on the Red?

EDIT: When I said the "zoom is smooth", I was only referring to how the zoom feels, not how it looks. The zoom footage isn't all that smooth. Also, just added a sixth picture which is a 100% crop of a portion of the full HD frame. You can see the image starts to break down at this size whereas an image from the Red would hold up at 4 times this size. Plus, these files are huge -- 100MB for a 20 second clip. I cannot even imagine dealing with that out in the field, not to mention battery issues, lack of control over shutter speed, ISO and aperture (only has 4 possible settings even with tricks) and of course audio synch concerns, lack of 24p, etc. However, I can see a lot of situations where I this camera will come in handy.

I have the Sigma 28-300, which I use often on my 5D2. It gets a little soft at the long end, even for 1080p video. It's roughly the same price new.

I can't say the zoom is smooth, though.

When you have a 21MP RAW camera, it's hard to judge resolution with tiny web jpegs.

What I really need is a good zoom that reaches out to 400mm, and has image stabilization. 300mm on a full frame 35mm is too weak, IMO. Plus these cheapy lenses are not very stable in any kind of wind.

Yeah. Main reason I bought this lens is because my wider Canon lenses aren't compatible with the 5D2 and because my 70-200L is too big and heavy and can't go wide.

Just to be clear, the above images are screen shots of the 1080p video sized down to 1/4 size for RedUser. Anyway we can get the max image size for RU up to 2048 from 1024 so we can upload full size (albeit JPG compressed) HD stills?

I don't know about rentals... delivery for new orders is running one to three days right now...

Hi Erik:

Last I had read, there was some fulfillment delay. So I can just order on your site today and I'll for sure receive it next week? Only one option at $980? Is that fully featured? Couldn't find where to actually purchase on your site?

Thanks,

Remote kit is still backordered. Mount kits are not. The next mount ordered will ship on wednesday, or sooner. We have more than a few, but less than a lot.

Hi Erik:

Just faxed my order and payment. Please send the mount out asap then ship the remote kit and 10' cable for the remote whenever it is ready. Please PM me if you didn't receive the fax or if any problems with the order.

Thanks again. I'm crazy excited.
