I think the fact that they can do this with a 5 year old Canon DSLR is amazing. How far Magic Lantern have been able to, and continue to push Canon DSLRs is great.

next time I'll have to use a go pro, I might consider the 50d instead

It will be nice to have options other than fisheye view in expendable cameras... :)

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!

This is an amazing game changer for Canon.
Im super impressed !
The moment they can start getting 120fps at 6k… I'm jumping back to canon.
But for now… this is amazing tech for those cameras.

one of the things I've learned over the past two decades in the space industry is the excitement that the inventors of this technology have when it finally reaches the hands of the general population. These people didn't develop the cmos sensor, integrated circuit, or the nearly twenty thousand other technologies that have changed global society for any other reason than to do it. Some of them have passed away, some have very little time left on this earth, and some are still youthful with much more to give...

6k camera sensors have been around for a long time... 6k consumer cameras... Not so much.

what should excite everyone of us is the paradigm shift that quite possibly could happen with video shooters around the world... If everyone jumps to raw... The nle companies such as adobe and apple should start addressing more issues we all would like addressed for our high res workflow.

I have always been an optimist... As are the people I work with...

I still want a red. But I also understand that the magic lantern folks are doing future cinematographers one heck of a favor.

Too bad Canon can't do this themselves.... Then again, this RAW thing is coming with some pretty big compromises. I'm seeing too many artifacts and issues with the 5DIII hack for me to ever consider using it for real work. However, it's almost tempting enough to get me to buy into Canon stuff again. Too bad all my glass is PL and Nikon with a few m4/3 stuff thrown in. My hacked GH2 is still a useful beast.

Have to completely agree with William's sentiments. If there is a massive paradigm shift to RAW video, it will only help us all in the end. I think that day is coming, just as it mostly has with stills photography.

Does anyone know if this is coming to the 7D? Can't find any info online at all. I'm not going to buy a 5D just for this, but it would be nice to have the RAW feature on the 7D I already own.

I haven't heard anything about the 7D but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. The previous magic lantern stuff on the 7D had to run off the CF card as they couldn't get it to load into the firmware. My guess is that it'll never work on the 7D which sucks cause we have two of those guys just laying around here. I'd like to be wrong cause it'll be great to have a couple tiny backup cameras without having to buy anything else other than faster cards.

7D is different beast, so it can take little longer.

50D was hacked before with regular ML for video shooting, but no audio.

Toia straddles the line between sarcasm and enthusiasm better than anyone.

what about the 1dx?

The EOS 1 lines are off limits. Canon has indicated that they will sue anyone that makes public a hack on those cameras.
In terms of the 7D, the hack has never gone as far as with the other cams. They only broke it last year. It has a very different firmware. Don't expect a RAW output anytime soon.

The 50D really cannot achieve high enough resolutions, so take Andrew Reid's proclamations with a grain of salt. The 5D Mark III is currently the only cam able to hit 1080p without dropping frames (and on a very fast card) right now.

Which is quite weird and interesting. I know the heat sink in the 1DX is smaller in comparison to the 1DC - but Magic Lantern would have its way with the 1DX...probably making it superior to the 1DC if they attempted to do so ;-)

Clearly. The power is really all there under the hood.
It would definitely kill the 1DC the second it was released.
Too bad though, because the latter is already dying a slow death.
I have seen used ones already going for half price.

No the 1DC offers a much cleaner and artifact-free image with a proper OLPF tuned to 1080p and much better CMOS skew than any of these hacks. That said, I would never buy a 1DC, but I would never shoot video with a DSLR either.

If you see 1dc for half price, please let me know-i am interested.
