Would any one have any views about this lens Canon 50 300L f4.5 FD, I understand a few were converted for Motion picture work some while back but I don know if its parafocal or how it looks. I know the Nikon 50 300 which is a nice lens but wanted to find a lens that focused Cinewise. Are there any other lenses suited for wildlife work in this focal length range we should consider.

thanks

I did briefly own this lens you speak of. I can't recall if its parofocal or not, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't. The one I had was in a dual PL/BNCR mount, so it could be used on either camera mount. It was labeled with "Samcine" because Sammy's of London did the cine conversion. The couple times I slapped it on the camera I was pleased with its performance. I think it would make a beautiful wildlife lens, especially for the price :) Good luck with your search.

How much does a lens like this go for?

What do you mean by "focused Cinewise?"

I mean the focus rotation is same as a true motion picture lens i.e. not reversed like Nikon. Nothing against Nikon at all just if its in a set of lenses and one rotates the other way its confusing to me at least.

I am interested also to know how the Canon 50-300mm L f4.5 holds up agains the Nikon 50-300mm ED f.4.5 (which I believe the glass was used to create a Panavision lens.) Any views would be welcome.

I have to say also its not so much looking for inexpensive glass, I'm looking for good glass with in this extended zoom range that covers 5 and 6k and preferably full frame.

I too am interested!!!
Nikon has 3 versions, what is the best?
Is the best canon or nikon, only lens (better image ad performance)

thanks for every answer

You ask the same questions and I think thats good ! I can tell you the Nikon is a very good lens its the 50-300mm f4.5 ED your after and in a suitable mount. We would use an A mount for it. Our only objection is the focus and zoom rotation direction.

Our interest in the Canon is it focuses and zooms correct direction for motion picture lenses and i know some have been converted before and some people speak highly of the lens.

Here's some images I found when googling. Looks as though it would make nice pictures to me.

Wow very beautiful colors and brilliant.
Lightweight and easy to transport.
I also use Allstar-mount; and hunting nature, wildlife.
I found the Nikon for 350 to 1000 $
900-1000 for ED
And Canon 600 to 1000
all EBAY
maybe I'll jump, I buy one at an average price 600$ :frown5:

Summer is approaching and a 300mm or Sigma 120-300 too heavy and big for mountain transport (doc style)
Very nice for me Red 18-50 and 50-300. 2 lenses for 3-4 kg

Any suggestions or clarification is very welcome

I think you could use the Canon FD 50 300 L or the Nikon 50 300 but MUST be the ED version. The Nikon would be eaiser to mount with the A mount just using the A mount F adaptor. A stock Canon 50-300 FD would need converting but this is a known conversion that has been happening for years Im told so should be relatively strait forward.

We have purchased a Canon 50 300mm so will post back here when we have run tests with it.
